On the recommendation of Davie Palmer I fly into El Calafate in order to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier. Its pretty much the only reason anyone comes to this town and thank god Davie gives good tips. Visiting the glacier is one of the higlights of my trip, although I do have quite a few highlights.
The glacier face is 2.5km wide, between 40 and 60m in height and is one of the only glaciers in the world to be advancing. Sometimes by up to 2m per day. I take a cruise to get as close as possible to the glacier face and its here that you can really get a feel for the size of this rather large chunk of moving ice. Under the clouds the colors of the ice are a more vivid blue then when the sun is out and its amazing to think how this thing still exists.
After the cruise I hike between viewing platforms to join everyone waiting for a chunk of ice to calve off the face and canon into the water below. The sound of this when it happens is like a massive bomb going off and we all wait with great anticipation between calvings. I wait with empanadas and coffee in hand soaking up the serenity.
