Jo-anne and I did a 2 week trip to Mildura and Broken Hill in May chasing the last of the warm weather. Mildura was warm however Broken Hill was bloody cold and windy. We managed to use everything in the van to make sure everything was working. I even reluctantly allowed Jo-anne to use the onboard s***ter, which somehow has become my job to empty.
We visited Mungo National Park, this place was like a moonscape. We also learnt our first lesson. Lesson 1: Always carry aeroguard. The flies in this place were unbelievable, we were ferociously attacked the minute we got out of the car.
Next was Broken Hill which is 300klms north of Mildura with nothing but 300klms of road kill. The roadside is littered with dead kangaroos and emus. We had done some initial research on where to stay. There seemed to be only 2 caravan parks in Broken Hill and both not very appealing. Further research uncovered that it was possible to stay at the racetrack, this sounded appealing as it was bound to have plenty of green grass.
The Broken Hill mine is quite interesting, in that the mine is actually right behind the main street of the town.
We also discovered a solar farm. This was built about 6 years ago and there are 700,000 solar panels in a paddock, (its a big paddock) it generates enough power for 17,000 homes. This site covers about 400 acres.
