Steve's Global Adventure
Arrived in Krabi at about lunchtime after suffering a horrendous hangover on the boat from Ko Phi Phi. I was alittle sad to leave Phi Phi as it was such a beautiful island, however still a little excited about what Krabi had to offer. the best places to stay are apparently Railey and Aonang. After assessing the prices in the former, I settled for the latter due to my scarce budget at the moment.
The hotel was lovely. I was staying just off the beach road on the top floor and a balcony facing the sunset. The hotel staff were lovely too and turned down the bed for me when I arrived and took great pleasure in showing me around the room and how everything works. It the small touches like that which mean so much.
Aonang didn't have a decent beach to speak of, but that didn't matter as I was only really passing through this town (3 nights) on my way to Koh Samui. The main beach street was dotted with restaurants, shops and travel agents as if catering to a more 'middle class' tourist. The people holidaying here seemed to be doing just that and not travelling through like I was. Nevertheless, the food in the restaurants was decent, the hotel was great and there were lots of shops to peruse of an evening. I felt very comfortable. During the days, as the beach was not really a beach as such, I spent time at a posh resort and used their swimming pool and facilities. It was quite cheeky actually, but they didn't seem to mind and it wasn't very busy anyway!
So it was then off to Koh Samui, which was the change of plan from Koh Tau. The change of mind came about purely because it was quicker and cheaper to get to Samui than Tau and the only reason I was planning to go to Koh Tau was the diving, but I had already spent enought time and money doing that.
The journey took a lot longer than expected. When you look at it on the map, you think 2 hours by bus to the ferry and then about an hour on the ferry. I left at 9 am and didn't get there until about 10 hours later! Lots of 'fannying' about on the mainland, shuffling us across three different buses, didn't help to get us there any quicker!
Samui was a much more lively place catering, this time, to a much younger audience but again your average holiday maker. There were lots of blokes in fake Burberry with tattoo's and highlights as far as the eye could see - mostly English I would say. Your girls were typically of the Essex variety, most of whom had drunk far more than they could handle.
On the upside, the shopping was great and I invested in lots of new Playstation 2 games, which were only about 2 GBPounds each - it seems criminal not to doesn't it? The beaches too were really nice and again I crashed out at a fancy resort for most of the days, soaking up the sun and watching all the action from my oversized sun lounger. Nobody knew that I wasn't staying there and if anyone asked then naturally I would lie!
Only stayed for 3 nights in Samui and despite al the holiday makers and the fact that it was all geared up for a pissed night out, I actually quite enjoyed myself there. I have learnt now that you have to make of a place what you can. Did I mention that they had a strip club called "Snatch", which I found completely amusing (some of this audience may not understand, but don't fret!).
So after being reminded of what England is like in Summer at Koh Samui, it was off again to the next place - Koh Phangan. I am going here for the last 10 nights on the islands and preparing mentally for my trip home. I only plan to chill out on the beaches during the day and check out some of the nightlife by night. Sort of treating this as my own little holiday before arriving in Manchester to the gales of icy rain (brrrrr)!!
Miss you all loads,
Stephen xxx
