We had to get our skates on as we wanted to be at Uluru (Ayers Rock) by sunset, the guide (Mark) put his foot down and we made it in plenty of time. During the journey we all thought we had our first glimpses of the rock but it turned out to be Mount Connor - still very impressive. As I said we arrived in plenty of time and had the sunset site to ourselves for an hour. Uluru was everything we imagined and looked just like the photos. As the sun went down the site busied up but we still got a great view to watch the changing colours - it was more subtle than we thought. On to our new camp for another night under the stars. It was an early night (10pm) as we getting up to watch the sun rise (4.15am) are we mad ?? We were tired when we arrived at Uluru at 5.15am after a better nights sleep but the effort was worth it to see the silhouette and the colour change at sunrise. It was the off to the rock for a small walk to learn the culture and some of the stories before the mamoth 9.2km base walk some of the guys on the trip wanted to climb the rock which they did in the afternoon, we decided to respect the Aboriginal wishes not to climb and went to the culural centre and the visitor center instead - it was also very steep as you will see from the photos. We then went to Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) for sunset. Our last night under the stars was the best as we sat and looked at the stars - Jo was over the moon to see a shooting star. We had a lie in til 6am before again watching the sun rise over Uluru and Kata Tjuta from our camp site. It was then off to Kata Tjuta for a walk, only 7.5km this time. Kata Tjuta is where Aboriginal boys go to become men and is therefore a very sacred place. We then headed back to camp for lunch before the 500km journey back to Alice Springs. We had a great time but looked forward to a proper bed and a hot shower as we were shattered. Next stop Cairns to do our washing !!!
