This morning started too early after a late night because we had to pack ourselves up and collect a hire car and as we had had three nights we had spread ourselves far and wide. David headed off at around 8:30 and I packed everything up, the cubes are a complete godsend ! I was really surprised when he turned up earlier than expected. We through the last bits in, forgetting the margarine and the milk. Anyway the large car was easier to pack than the Legacy and by 9:30 we were ready to leave. The weather is so wet and woolly - this is not the Oz we booked, we have have changed our names to the Raingod Spurways.
We eventually fought out way out of Melbourne and out to Geelong. The countryside at this point is so flat and uninteresting. We continued on through industrial Geelong and onto the resort of Torquay, amazing beach and strangely similar weather to its UK namesake. The girls had a nice play on a huge and well designed play park with walkways, climbing frames and slides. We got back to the car just in time for it to tip it down. We drove on through Anglesea and onto Aireys Inlets where we had lunch in small café. We then found Split Point Lighthouse and had a nice walk around. The girls enjoyed looking at the lighthouse but rebelled when we thought about doing more walking.
We then drove onto the Great Ocean road, we knew we had started that part of our route as there was a huge gateway over the road announcing that fact. The road has been described as perching on the edge of a cliff and it certainly does that. We noticed a vast difference between NZ and Oz roads, here the road is lined with crash barriers, in NZ they are lined with a wing, a prayer and if you are lucky a wire fence.
We arrived in Apollo bay to be greeted by the police doing spot checks. David was mildly excited by the thought of being breathalysed but the policeman had a nice chat with us and waved us on. We pulled up at Captains on the Bay to check in, only to be sent to another building as our room is oceanfront and above the newsagents, it is also huge !
We settled in and went to explore the town. We walked to the beach and watched the surf and the surf lifesaving club practise. We followed this by a trip to the shops to buy a new pump for the pushchair as we had a flat, some toys for the beach in case the weather improves and some food for dinner.
