On Friday while staying in San Ignacio, Belize, I went for a day trip to the Actun Tunichil Muknil Caves, that are categorically the coolest cave system I've ever been in. The caves were about an hours drive through the country side from San Ignacio followed by an hour long hike through the jungle to the cave with three rivers on the way that we waded across. Headed south to Tulum for my last two nights in the Mexico. We stayed a place called Paypaya Playa in little huts (cabanas) perched on the rocky foreshore just about an amazing white sand beach. The huts had walls made out of lose fitting sticks and a thatched roof, the bed in the middle had a mosquito net to keep out the nasties as the stick walls had large gaps to allow cooling by sea breeze. Yesterday we arrived in Playa Del Carmen, it was a relief to see the sea after a month spent predominately in the clouded Mexican highlands was a relief. After San Christobal we had a five hour bus journey on a road that was even more windy that the road to San Christobal! It ened up in low land and some very welcome heat, though the nolivety of the humidity soon wore off. We stayed in the town of Palenque for two nights, visited the Mayan ruins there and then continued to Merida the capital city of Yucatan state where we visited another Mayan city/ruin at Uxmal. I've been sick in one form of another since I hit Mexico City. At first I had a tummy bug and as this was clearing I managed to get a head cold with bonus sore throat and had this from Puebla, through our stay in Oxaca (prounced wa-ha-ka) and further south to my current location, San Cristobal de la Casas.
