The road to Monument Valley has one very cool location on it. The scene from Forrest Gump where he is running into the distance with through the desert was filmed there. Our bus got parked on the cleared ground that housed the movie crews and then we all took photos and videos of us doing the Forrest run at the same time dodging the oncoming traffic from both directions.
Monument Valley was amazing. Touring around with a Navajo guide we not only got to see various rock formations which go better and better as then evening progressed but got to learn a bit about Navajo culture and there relationship with the land. Rather than day trip we opted for the full tour where we stayed in the reservation overnight. This was fantastic as we got to try some traditional Navajo food and take part in a campfire with traditional singing and dancing - I've done this kind of cultural immersion before in other parts of the world and it always left me feeling voyeuristic. This did not have the same effect but left me feeling as a welcomed guest learning about a culture. We all slept under the stars and then were treated to what was the most amazing sunrise of the trip with the spires of rock in the foreground and the sun following this.
