OH CANADA!!! We made it to Canada, it was a beautiful ride, but at times a little scary. There are several routes from Keewaydin to Gananoque and the route we chose had us traveling through some very narrow and shallow waters.
When choosing our routes we consider a lot of variables, two important ones are water depth and distance. It would have been very easy to choose a route with much deeper water, but that could very easily double or triple the distance that would have to travel.
The route we took balanced distance and depth, it also took us through some very breath taking areas. Houses built feet or should I say meters from the water's edge, fisherman right alongside of us as we navigate the channel, birds everywhere, and the islands everywhere.
As we passed over the Canadian Border, I hoisted a yellow flag. The yellow flag lets border patrol know that we have arrived from out of the country and have not cleared our arrival with customs yet. Once we arrived at the marina and secured the boat I had to call customs. Canada makes it very easy for boaters to check in with customs. To check in, you call customs from your boat, they ask you several questions relating to guns, alcohol, tobacco and drugs. Once you answer their questions the give you a clearance number, and you switch your yellow quarantine flag for a Canadian flag, and post your clearance number on the side of your boat.
As soon as we headed to the marina office to check in we saw the great hospitality the Canadian waterfront is known for. In the front of the office is a herb garden with a sign, help yourself.
Gananoque is a typical waterfront town with several restaurants, bars and museums. We spent two days exploring the town, visiting museums and of course checking out the restaurants.
Our next stop is Kingston Ontario.
