Today was a very short ride to Middle Bass Island. We could have gone further but our next stop is another 50 miles away. We are trying to keep our travel to under 50 miles/ 5 hours a day. Also Lake Erie was a little snotty this morning. Hopefully tomorrow will be nicer.
Middle Bass Island is a very small island with 2 restaurants (One of which is also the general store and not much else. We thought there was a winery on the island but it turns out the property was bought by the State Of Ohio in 2001 and turned into a state park. The park is called Lonz Winery, I call that false advertising!
We found out from one of the year round residents that all ferry services to the island stops the day after Thanksgiving, and the lake normally freezes and they use snowmobiles to travel to Put In Bay for supplies. Also there are two airports on the island. On is a grass strip, and the residents that live around it keep their planes in their back yard. You can also pre buy your beer and wine for the winter from the general store, and they will hold it for you to pick up as you need it.
We stayed at the State Park Marina, which was very nice. It seems that most of the slips are for transient boaters, and were vacant while we here. The docks are covered in seagull droppings. The dock hand apologized, and told us that they get power washed every Friday. That will not do us any good, as it is Thursday. I spent 45 minutes spraying down the dock around our boat so we did not track in into the boat.
Friday morning we will be leaving Lake Erie and heading up the Detroit River. Part of the trip will take us through Canadian waters. Even though the boarder is closed we have been told that as long as we do not stop, anchor or touch land we will be ok.
Keep the comments coming we love reading them. When we are done the Great Loop, we will have the entire blog printed into a book. It will include all of the comments that our readers leave.
