I'm writing from the Iwokrama outpost on the Esquibo river in central Guyana. I arrived late on the 3rd with Bernadette, the other girl doing the scheme, and after spending ten minutes filling out immigration forms for Chinese officials who couldn't understand english (I was so tempted to write occupation-spy and send them through) we got taken into the capital Georgetown and to our guesthouse. We spent yesterday in Georgetown, the capital, taking a tour and seeing the sights. Georgetown has a brand new cricket stadium for the world cup, the tallest wooden structure in the world (the cathedral) a great museum of anthropology, and a zoo where everything is dying - perhaps because death is preferable to the shocking condtions the animals live in. That said we both fed and stroked some manatees and Bernadette made out with a Tapir. We had a very cheap, very good chinese lunhc (there are loads of chinese in Guyana) and sat in a bar for the afternoon before catching the bus to Iwokrama at 9 last night. I managed to get some sleep despite the strange roads (they're sand, it's been raining so sometimes it was a bit hectic!) and even woke up once to find the ten year old girl sat next to me asleep on my knee. The lady in front of me managed to bag herself the luggage boy on the bus and so I woke up to find them cuddling and her headphones playing Celine Dion's classic - The Power of Love. This morning we've had a look around the research centre, seen some snakes in jars and checked out our accomodation. I've got a nice big double bed which is sweet. Anyway, off for our briefing now, we're going to find out what we'll be working on here. We're here for a week and then moving to the jungle canopy walk (google it, it looks awesome!). More soon!
