Set alarm for 10am, & managed to get downstairs for just after 11 for our "continental" breakfast - a small plate of slices of fruit, some bread rolls & jam, & coffee. Enough to take the edge off our hunger, but not enough! Decided to walk to the Zocalo, & D confidently strode on, map in hand. Three blocks later, we realised that we had gone in completely the wrong direction, but instead of turning around, retracing our steps, we decided to continue 'round the block. On turning the next corner, we found an amazing bakery, with windows full of dozens of delicious looking cakes & biscuits. We went in, & chose one each, & it came to a grand total of M$21 (£1) ! We walked up to the park (Alameda Central) to eat them, & found a street market & a huge merry-go-round, which the kids enjoyed riding on, whilst listening to Spanish language version of Xmas standards!
As we walked towards the centre, it became more & more crowded, until (at the Zocalo) we were squeezing our way through a dense crowd of people. There was a huge Xmas tree beside the massive flagpole, market stalls all over, & an ice rink! We wandered around, aimlessly, for a while, a little fazed by the crowds, until we reached Templo Mayor, where we stopped, to tell the kids a little of the history of the place.
We continued our walk around the Zocalo, then decided to try to get away from the crowds, & find a café. We found the Hotel principal, where D&L stayed in 1999, & got a price for a room, for our return journey in January. Then we went look for "our" old café, but the place as we remembered it was not there, although the street was now full of cafes!
We sat inside & had an expensive round of drinks, & then, decided to head back to the hotel. After refreshing ourselves, we returned to our free food" bar for tea & beers! On returning to the hotel, the kids took an age to settle - probably due to the four coca-colas that they had with their tea!
