The South America Adventure!
After what Bree said that Santiago was a 'smoggy' city. Rubbish! It's one of the cleanest city that I've been to. It's a wicked city, very hippy and funky! We`d been in Santiago for longer than planned but we never bore of the city. So much to do and lots of entertainment, especially our favourite "hobby": socialising! Bree was delighted that she actually could go shopping for clothes, at last! She bought piles of clothes (!). We strolled around the city taking in our new surroundings, admiring the beautiful views of snow-capped mountains that you could see from the city, making it unique. We also bought our very first car that made us smile, Big Time.
Our first car trip took us down to the south of Chile, we travelled to Talca, Chillan, Temuco, Valdivia, Osorno and many places to visit. And then all the way down to Puerto Montt, a nice city, quiet and relaxing. We were planning to go to Torres Del Paine, which is one of the highlands in South America but unfortunately we couldn't drive further south due to lift across the sea not being until the following few days. We were stuck in Hornopiren and we were told the road ended, so no way of going on! So we decided to go through the border of Argentina so we can travel to Torres Del Paine. But unfortunately we need a formal documents to allow us to pass the border, need to go back to Santiago to get the form! On the way back, we went to Chiloe Island which we reached by a short boat ride had wood-shingled houses on stils hovering precariously over the waters and fabulous views. But our adventure by car wasn't wasted, as there were so many things that happened along the way. Emlyn had to drive along to an incredible dramatic motorway, `Carretera Austral` and during the route the weather was pouring with strong winds: suddenly Emlyn saw a tree fall across the road and blocking the way. Luckily he managed to drive over the branches. Emlyn saved a dog's life, swerving around it as not to run it over! It reminded us of the car advert when the deer picture himself when he was 7 years old and enjoying with his mother. And then the deer didn't get hit by the car because it had good wheels. Remember?! But our old car!! Emlyn has had good practise to be in a Rally team, driving over pot-holes and bumpy roads! Another funny thing happened, we went off the beaten road towards the Pacific Ocean in Chiloe we saw a nice long bit of beach and drove across, Emlyn in his "I'm a Rally Driver" mood got us stuck in the sand! Some friendly people helped us push the car out, very hard work! Without them, it's impossible to drive along! The most funny thing in Chiloe was we were driving along and had the need to do something spontaneous, driving pass a lake we stopped and decided to go for a swim. I dared us all to swim naked, running butt-naked into the lake we realised the water was FREEZING! Us boys were gob-smacked as Bree confidently in slow-motion as if she used her imagination being an actress on the baywatch!! Emlyn ran back out and refused to swim.. I told him that I won't swim unless he swims so we had an long debate. Emlyn said "honestly" I won't swim, its fecking cold!" I was like "get your ass in the water!" Finally after 20 mins of persuading him he finally went into the water!! But we only stayed in the water for just 2 mins! I would say the temp was -30 degrees: FRIO!
Near Pucon Emlyn and Bree spotted a nightclub and decided to stop for a "rest"! When we walked in the bar we caught a lot of the local people attention, they were probably thinking "what are those three scruffy looking people doing here?!" But we cant have been looking too bad as one women came along and asked Emlyn to dance, being too embarrassed with his lack of dancing skills, pointed to me! I, being a gentleman danced with her, but couldn't follow the rhythm of the music very well and she kept speaking Spanish to me!
After a few drinks we carried on to Pucon, at 4am Emlyn and I opened our eyes widely when we saw ......CASINO! Then slept in the car until the next morning.
Pucon is a place of adventure and tourist navel of the Lake District. It`s the most convenient place in Chile to do it all, e.g. activities. - rock climbing, water rafting, skiing so much more. We went Quad-Biking, something different from the other activities we'd tried. It was wiicckkeedd! I love it! Emlyn thinks he's the best driver! It got dark quickly and only I had a light on the quad bike. All of us Zooming off ignoring the guide to slow down (he was riding on the back of Emlyn's quad!). Emlyn went faster and faster and then crashed to the tree! Ha! Yeah he`s the "best driver"! He had to pay a fine of 30 pounds for the damage. We went to Hot Springs to relax ourselves after a long journey. We wanted to go to Concepcion for a stop-over and a bite to eat in a yummy American restaurant (they even had "Belfast Sandwich" and "Liverpool Hamburger" on the menu!) Also this place is the 2nd biggest city and the many universities provide a youthful buzz.
We went back to Santiago to get the formal documents for our car to allow us to cross the Argentina border. But unfortunately it got delayed till a week! We were extremely disappointed because we felt we have had enough of Chile. Emlyn and I went to the Flannery's pub (Irish pub!) to watch the football between England and Denmark but unfortunately it wasn't on the T.V but we watched Holland vs Germany instead. During the half time, we bumped 2 deaf people, Fernando (Chile) and Elena (Spain). What a lovely couple! We were so delighted to see them as Fernando organised for us to meet some more Chilean deafies and go to parties! We such had a brilliant time: we will never ever forget! We love Chilean deafies as they were so friendly, outgoing and great fun.
We went to Mackay's houseparty, really COOOOOLLL. A lovely big posh house, we partied downstairs in the basement so her parents could sleep upstairs without being disturbed by our racket! Chilean culture start at drinking and partying at 12am and finish when the daylight comes! Vee! We are hoping to influence the British people to do the same when we get back, doubt it will work though! After partying till 6am, we went back to the hotel for a quick sleep then up a few hours later off skiing for a day. I was soo looking forward to it as it was my first time. I assumed that I would be good at it, but please I was totally hopeless! I couldn't stop falling every few min! Everyone laughed at me but they did cheered me on! After an hour, Emlyn and Bree went to the other areas together because they are too good for the green and blue line (easy). I was so determined to practise on the same area until I get better. It took me 2 hours to finally be able to get the hang of skiing! Woo!
I went up to the red line (quite hard) and on coming down I went too fast not being able to slow down I suddenly went flying and whack, smack the snow landing right on my face! Was soo embarrassed! People who saw the fall, couldn't stop laughing their heads off! But overall, HONESTLY it was awesome! I absolutely love skiing big time. Definitely want to go again, perhaps in Alps, some day no question about it! The views were phemonal, the best views from the ski lifts and the atmosphere was amazing. Wikked! On the way back to Santiago, the road were incredible slippery, Emlyn couldn't cope driving well downhill and suddenly bumped to the snow-wall. Luckily the car wasn't any damage at all.
We were meant to go to Argentina straight away, the Chilean deafies begged us to stay in Santiago longer was it was one of their birthday parties that weekend. We want to stay and meet more deafies but also needed to keep up with our time: the car documents gave us a reason to stay as they were not due for another 3 days!
It was a brilliant party, lots of pisco was drank! Happy and merry from the affects of alcohol, we were all WILD, the Chileans showing us how they party! We kinda like it! We got invited for Mackey`s (another girl also called Mackey) birthday party. There were well over 50 deafies and it was sooo good for us to meet all new faces. Was refreshing for us three are as we were getting bored of seeing each other! On that night, it was a SMASHING night! We had a wild time and the drink had us up for anything. Everyone did their speech and picked on who that will down a glass of pisco! Obviously they picked on us because we're foreign: but we showed them that us foreigners can drink the same as hard-drinking Chileans! We were so drunk by the end of the party when daylight was breaking through, we thoroughly enjoyed it. Emlyn's face was hilarious, really THACK face was embarrassed that he was our friend!!
Chile is totally different from the other countries we've been, really wicked country, as you travel from the north to the south the views are amazing, and completely different. The culture and people are very alike Europe, compared to the other countries we've been but offer just as many exciting experiences.
Finally received the document form after 10 days of waiting around. Horay!! We immediately headed to Argentina. We said a sad farewell to the Chilean deaf people. We travelled south back to Pucon (7 hours) exactly the same as we went earlier that week. Arriving at the border to Argentina we were half an hour late and found it was closed! We drove back to the nearest town and stayed at the cosy bed and breakfast overnight, where Bree cooked us a delicious pasta that made us boys smile! But the fact is cooking is the girl's job! We woken up very early the next morning and went to the border of Argentina. We prayed there would be no more hiccups but realised we needed an International insurance to pass through the border. Groans! So! Back to Pucon to get the insurance. After that, we had no problem passing through the border and were delight to arrive Argentina for the first time. People: the views in the Lake District in Argentina were ABSOLUTELY gorgeous!
Now it`s Emlyn turn to tell you about Argentina - Diego Maradona`s country - `The Hand of God` which us English will never forget! So it means this diary is my last one. Horay!!!!!
