After the genius moment of forgetting we are in a different time zone, we managed to miss our tour to the Argentine side by a solid hour (most amusing conversation with the receptionist who we thought was just being sassy when really she was just telling us the actual Brazil time!) So we laughed at our stupidity and jumped on a local bus to get to the Parque das Aves, the bird park. For the next two hours, we followed all of the little kids and their families (yay Sunday crowd) through a zoo full of exciting Amazon birds, and tropical birds, parrots, flamingoes, toucans (they really do have inflatable beaks!) and parikeets. A couple of turtles mated for us, there were a few iguanas and gators, lots more birds, big bird, small bird, birds bigger than your head, and a butterfly/humingbird house where the butterflies were even bigger than the humingbirds. It was great fun, and there are nearly 200 photos to prove it!
Next stop was the Brazilian falls. We were all ready to line up and dish out the 60 reals for each ticket until we realised the size of the line. We would be waiting at least an hour, maybe two, in the midday-afternoon sun. No thanks! We visited the gift shop though, so that's all that really matters, right?
When we returned to the hostel to escape the heat again, we looked up bus tickets to Florianapolis and realised that we would be better off going straight to Rio (less long bus rides). It meant no surfing, but it also means that we only have one big bus ride left before our flight, and that's kind of exciting. Anyway, paypal decided to pull a security stunt and wouldn't let me purchase anything, so we thought that a trip to the bus terminal was necessary (20 real each way), but in the end, turns out the hostel could organise it for us for an extra 12 reals. Damn, it's even better than bookingonline because they'll deliver the tickets to the hostel, too.
I feel like I should stop writing about our dinner adventures as if they are such a huge part of the day (they really are though), but this particular night was different. 'La Bella Pizza' is a strange version of a pizza restaurant - the waitors circle the restaurant with fresh pizzas, chips, polenta chips, chicken, and dessert pizzas, and you take what you want when they come around. For 22 reals (less than AUD8), we ate our moneys worth, and more. We rolled out of there a little later, having only spent AUD19 between us on food and beers, but incredibly full!
