We took a bit of a punt on Kalpitiya as we heard that the diving was good. An epic journey of trains, buses and tuk-tuk's eventually got us there. When the sun was out we managed to get a couple of good dives in and when the rain came (with vengeance) we drank King Edward Arrak (Sri Lankan whiskey) with locals and divers...

We planned a brief stop at Hikkaduwa to snorkel the Marine National Park but due to the weather, currents and visibility we decided to grab some beers and music and watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean. Aaron's tasting notes - I think a stout in Asia means really strong, really dark and not very nice. Either way a few of these with some tunes on the beach soon became enjoyable...

An awesome beach, great swimming and snorkelling was excuse enough to stay here for a few nights. Fresh fish, coconuts on the beach, banana and chocolate rotti's, coconut pancakes, wadi wadi and mega kottu and chicken gravy helped seal the deal. After chasing and nearly missing the bus for a bag of ketchup we made it to our first coastal stop. Tangalla is still very much an active fishing town so after helping the local fisherman we got to spend some time on the beach and in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean...

After randomly hitching a free ride on a family bus we spent the morning cruising around Yala National Park spotting elephants, sloth bears, Eagles, crocodiles and an abundance of other wild animals.
