Day Forty One - August 16th, 2013
Cairns
Definitely our laziest day on the journey so far! But seeing as we start the long trip towards Darwin tomorrow, perhaps we deserve it.
We paid a visit to ARB, a specialist 4x4 store to see if they could advise us on how to store a spare fuel carton outside of the vehicle. Unfortunately, without spending an extortionate amount of money, it's just not doable. Therefore, we headed back to Super Cheap Auto (for what seemed like the hundredth time) to pick up a plastic 10L can to keep in the car. Hopefully it can help us avoid the high prices of fuel in the centre and give us a safety blanket.
We put on a wash, and spent the morning at the pool. As Elly has finished his book (something I never thought would happen), we thought we'd look for a second hand shop and stock up for the next part of the trip. Driving into the city at 2pm in the stifling heat did nothing for our tempers, and after eventually finding a parking space but discovering we had no change to pay for the meter, and seeing the fuel light come on in the Landy, we cut our losses and headed for a petrol station to fill up the tank and the extra carton as well as check the air in the tyres. We swung by Wooly's to get some dinner and came back to the campsite. Not a productive day - very annoying.
We lazed around reading and uploading photos of the trip so far to Facebook until the sun had dipped low enough in the sky for a run. I'll miss the esplanade, it's a great place to exercise. We got back and discovered my towel had gone from the washing line. I hope someone has only picked it up by accident and will return it before tomorrow. Somehow I think it may have gone on purpose; it was amongst all my clothes.
We had the last supper with Ben and Megan, and got chatting to a Dutch couple. It seems everyone has had problems with their respective cars, and we swapped horror stories. This lead to scary stories, and resulted in Megan and I becoming very nervous. Quickly into the tent! Tomorrow we head west, and my mum will have landed in Sydney!
