Finally arrived in Ghana! I got off the plane and was beyond excitement! The African heat hit me as soon as I got off the plane, even at 9 o'clock at night.
All went smoothly at the airport, all my bags arrived and completly intact. So I went through the arrivals gate and the pick up point was actually the exit, so I stepped outside and was looking for the company who were arranged to pick me up....and they weren't there....so I tried to remain calm whilst numerous taxi drivers tried to get me and my luggage towards their cars...I called Martin the person who was meant to pick me up and he said he was told by my Gap Year company 2 weeks ago that I was not coming to work with them and he was not even in Accra at the time....so then I kinda paniced, some of the airport workers were really helpful and after calls back to the UK, I finally found out the volunteers company Real Gap were using for me had changed....but they somehow failed to mention that vital piece of information to me. So a man called Charles approached me and asked if my name was Sophie Bloor and I was doing hockey coaching for 5 weeks and I nearly jumped on him! Angry with Real Gap, but thankful things got sorted, I hopped onto their minibus and headed to the Pink Hostel where I am staying for 3 nights before moving to my host family.
I arrived at the hostel and was put in room 10, with 7 other girls. The hostel had 40 other volunteers staying there, most of whom had arrived 3 or 4 days before me. Most of them are from Norway and Sweden, but there are a few from Switzerland, Australia, Holland, Germany, Belgium and 1 girl from England.
I phonecall came to the room for me, it was Charles, he said he was in reception waiting for me...I joking in saying I would go out partying with him when we got back to the hostel, I was there for 10 mins, I thought why not, I might as well! So I changed into a skirt, grabbed my purse and jumped into the minibus. The club very small by any standards, but it had a good atmosphere, with plenty of other volunteers there. Hip-hop and rap were the order of the day, was thinking of Bexi- would be in your element here love! People generally drink smirnoff ice and bottled beer and funnily enough-guiness here, about 1.5 pounds per bottle. Got back to the hostel, chatted with the group who at the club, went to my bunk bed and froze cos i was right under the air conditioning vent!
