Hi all so a long awaited blog from Thailand. I have been very busy constantly on the move so it has ben hard to keep everyone updated of my where abouts. After finishing Vietnam and spending a week in Cambodia, I have set my feet down on a lovely island called Ko Tao. It will be nice to rest now after hoping from one city to the next.
After my time in Hoi an, I spent some time on two Vietnemese beach resorts Na Trang and Mui Ne. Mui Ne being my favourite even if it was invaded by Russians! I had lovely cheap sea food nearly evry night and could get a plate of lobster, crab, scallops and shrimps all for 2 pounds incredible!
After a few days of rest the quick travels started. Leaving the irish girls I was with 10 other backpackers. We went to Saigon where we visited the chu chi tunnels and the war museam. The war museam was quite an horrific site with the realisation of what the Amercians did to the Vietemese. Killing children and elders and testing their orange agent which has left people with severe disabilities, I had to walk past many of the photo's taken. Saigon I loved evn if it was full of traffic, it had a great vibe to it and good markets. I spent one of the nights on a street market singing along to a local man with his guitar.
The backpackers family got smaller and 6 of us travelled to Cambodia, Phnom Penh. Which at first sights was a busy and smelly city. We had a very interesting experience in a hostel for one night and decided to change after our door didn't lock! Phonm Penh had a great night life along the river front with street dances, people playing sport and the older generation dancing to Khmer music. Cambodia is obviously a very poor country but I was not prepared for the amount of street children hassling us. It is quite disgusting how the country exploits the children and especially young girls to western men. We took a day out to the killing fields and S21 prison, which was quite a dreary day. Not knowing much about it as I never studied it in history at school, I was shocked with what the Khmer Rouge got away with. The fact that Pol Pot was only put under house arrest and never hunted for when he left the country shows how corrupt Cambodia is. After how much grief the Cambodians have gone through I was surprised with how friendly they are. Even though they love us as we give them so much money, Cambodia was quite expensive as they charge everything in american dollars.
After a few tiring days in Phnom Penh we headed to the beach resort of Sihanokville. The worst bus ride ever and the first time I have ever got travel sick. Sihanokville was nice, a little touristy especially with Russian men after Cambodian women half their age. We found a beautiful beach and went for a day trip to the islands surrounding the coast, just wished I stayed there for a few nights, beautiful clear beaches and so quiet. I faced some of my fears snorkelling around the coral but very frightened of massive sea urchins far to near to our feet, especially 6 foot Darragh!
After another awful sleeper bus we arrived in Siem Reap, where we stayed in a lovely hostel with a pool. I was able to do some exercise after far too long. Siem Reap is a lovely small city with the most amazing markets and great food. Cambodian curries are the best! We went to Angkor Wat for sunset where we unfortunately didn't see much due to the clouds. The next morning however we enjoyed a day of sight seeing around Angkor Wat. The ruins are breath taking and just amazing to think everything was hand built and carved. It was quite a hot day and very tiring so I have no idea how people do it for 3 days or even a week!
After a great week in Cambodia which I recommend to people, I headed to Bangkok after trying to avoid it. Bangkok was not flooded at all well the city centre wasn't so I was fine travelling around the city. I really liked Bangkok could have stayed there longer, not sure if it would be the same when the surounding area was not flooded as apparently it was very quiet to usual. Had to replace my camera as it broke on me, not great but like my new techy toy!
Going off to enjoy a few drinks on the beach and then back to my bungalow on the beach for bed. Will keep you updated on my time in the islands, I might do a dive to conquer my fear on Saturday.
Hope all is well, lots of love xxx
