Wynyard, Tasmania (TAS) - 27th November 2008
Wynyard Car Kilometres: 184,894
Distance Travelled: 103km
Total Distance Travelled: 16,643km
After an enjoyable ferry ride, including a free cinema viewing of The Visitor before we retreated to our generously proportioned and quite comfortable reclining seats to doze the night away, we are in Tassie, and disembark the ship uneventfully.
We're tired though; as comfy as we were, we didn't sleep brilliantly - the ship's purser announcing that it was time to get up and into our cars when it was still dark outside disagreed with our usual preference for a good eight hours' solid shut eye. However, as we roll the Falcon out into the damp and drizzly town of Devonport, we're pleased to be here.
Nothing manages to hold our attention past a hot breakfast in Devonport, so after a feed we're on our way west to Wynyard, planning to use it as a base to have a look around the north-west coast. Unfortunately, before this pair of intrepid explorers goes any further than the campsite amenities block, we need some kip, and there is a windswept, quiet, beach side camp site with our name on it. We heft the tent up as fast as we can, and put into motion our well oiled setting-up camp routine, collapsing into sleep well before the pubs open for their evening sessions.
Feeling very refreshed, we spruce ourselves up the following morning and drive further west to Stanley, home to The Nut, or Circular Head as it is properly known. The Nut is a 152-metre high volcanic table-top formation (essentially a really big hill), which we plan to explore... although we take the slightly less energetic way out, and instead of cheerily hiking up the side, take the chairlift to the top (to keep things even, we do remember to wave to the cheery hikers as we dangle precariously above).
After a good trek around the top, taking in some beautiful views out to sea and of the surrounding area, we chairlift it down again for a delicious coffee in the friendly cafe at the bottom.
We tramp back to the car and continue our cruise of the north coast, stopping off at the beautiful Sister's beach on the way.
