The adventures of Dani and Dave!
Greetings from Borneo!
Had a great time in Bangkok finishing up watching an amazing few hours of Thai Boxing, these guys are unreal so agile, its great to watch and 5 hours just flies by.
We headed south to Malaysia catching a flight to Kuala Lumpur where we had a great 2 days exploring the city sights, we went to the top of the KL tower which unfortunately didn't have the best views as its quiet hazy from the Indonesian forest fires, we walked around the city which is quiet stunning with the Petronas towers (worlds tallest building) dominating the city skyline. We stayed in a hostel in China town and met some other travellers who we went out with for a few drinks with and stuggled to get up the next day for our trip to the famous Batu Caves which were spectacular, its a huge cave devoted to Hinduism with many HIndu statues and murals inside, millions meet here in January where they have a huge festival and partake in strange rituals such as hanging weights off their bodys by string but the string is attached to numerous hooks freshly pierced through their skin and they put metal rods through their cheeks and noses, all abit gory really but it is a personal sacrifice they need to do in the name of religion.
WE then headed up to Georgetown which is in Penang in the North for a day and headed round the sights, ate and drank abit and went to a Chinese Temple and explored a Chinese village where the houses are all on stilts in the water, they have these huge lizards under the houses which the residents feed left overs to in hope the lizard will one morning be in their house as this apparently means they will come into lots of money.. Fair enough!
Then we head to Langkawi, a beautiful island off the west coast of Peninsula Malaysia where we expored the Island by car and visited some amazing beaches, waterfalls etc. We spend a week here then headed over to Borneo where we have visted Bako national park and been on some amazing treks seeing fantatsic wildlife such as Orangutans, Probiscus monkeys, you only can find these in Borneo. We stayed in the park and did a night jungle trek which was excellent seeing some Vipers, various large spiders, insects, the jungle really comes alive at night.
We visited an Orangutan Sanctuary where they are actually all in teh wild now so we were guaranteed to see any but they put some fruit out and one came back and had a feed so we got some good shots there.
We nect flew upto Kota Kinabalu where I am actually writing this from now where we based ourselves to visit the surrounding Island, did some snorkelling which was really amazing as i wasn't expecting too much but it was am aquarium with fantastic coral formations, crystal clear water and a huge assortment of tropical fish to view.
We next went took a bus to doo 4 nights in teh rainforest which included numerous river cruises down the Batangan river. we stayed in basic huts in teh rainforest where we stayed with a Swede, 3 english a Spandiard and an Aussie. we all got on great which made it a fantastic few days. We hit the river in a small boat seeing Crocadiles, Probiscus monkeys, a Python, Horn bills, other weird and wonderful animals. We did another night trek where our crazy guide found a huge scorpion and was encouraging us to hold it. only one person accepted and it wasn't me. We found a species of Tarantular which they only discovered last month too. The next morning a mother and baby orangutang were outside our hut in a tree which was amazing. Had a fantatsic few days crusing the river and it was an experience staying in the jungle..
we next headed to Mabul Island on the other side of borneo by bus with 5 others from camp t do our PADI open water dive course which lasted 3 days, I'm pleased to say Dani and i have our certificates and dived the Island of Sipaudan yesterday which is supposed to be the best site in teh world we saw many green turtles, some small sharks, crocadile fish, puffa fish, baracuda, moray eels and so many other species i haven't a clue what the names were, it was like being in a dream down there, so stunning! We had teh best day ever! We are soo soo happy to have our certificates we hit about 20 metres but most of the life was about 10 - 15 meters. The turtle were huge coming over and investigating us! Its was such a laugh as we passed the same day as Evan, one of teh guys from the rainforest camp! It was a shame leaving last night actually, but we are back in Kota Kinabalu following a 12 hour bus journey. We will be flyong to Manila in the Phillapines tomorrow!
Hope everyone is well!
Love Dave & Dani XX
