G'day from Melbourne!
We arrived here yesterday after 4 days in the Outback and Alice Springs. We spent our first day chilling in Alice which has to be the smallest city centre ever! There were quite a lot of aboriginal people in the city which was really intimidating, as they were staring at you and asking you for things. The weather was really nice, not a cloud in the sky and really warm, although neither of us have been somewhere with such extreme weather. The mornings were cold then it would reach 26c by the afternoon followed by evenings near freezing.
On the first day of the tour we drove for over 750kms and spent the majority of the day at Kings Canyon where we did a 3hour walk around it. Then to our camp for the night which was pretty much in the middle of nowhere. We spent the night in swags (basically water-proof sleeping bags with a hood) by the campfire. The night's sky was amazing, stars everywhere!
The second day we made our way to Kata Tjuta passing Uluru (Ayres Rock) for a 7 and a half trek km which was pretty and I thought a bit more interesting than Ayres Rock. Then in time for sunset we went to the lookout point at Ayres Rock and made dinner here too. The rock changed many colours of red, orange and brown which was interesting. We stayed at the Ayres Rock Resort (campsite) a bit more luxury this night with toilets and showers. We were all sitting around the campfire where Paul played guitar and I was being an idiot coming out with one liners!
The third and final day we went to Ayres Rock lookout point to see the sunrise, although the rock didn't change that many colours this time! It was freezing! We then had the option of doing a base walk or climb the rock. We went for the 9km walk around it because climbing it was dangerous, windy and the aboriginals don't like you doing it! It was a long walk! The people on our tour who did the climb said it was soooo windy at the top but amazing, but they came back missing a hat and a glove, not to mention also almost a camera & person! We made the 6 hour journey back to Alice after stopping for lunch - where an emu decided to invade our picnic! A quick stop off at the Camel Farm where Paul took a ride on a camel for $5 before getting back in Alice at 6pm (ish) In the evening we went out and had dinner and drinks with our group. We met some great people!
On our final day in Alice, we nearly missed the airport shuttle as I took too long getting ready! Then got the plane to Melbourne, checking into our really nice hostel which only opened early this year.
We are hiring a car tomorrow and going to Wilson's Prom then back to Melbourne.
Speak to you all soon.
P.S Check out our pictures we have put up from our outback experience!
