Have you ever... ever felt like this?... when strange things happen when you're going round the twist. I am not referring to Ju driving me mad but an old Australian kids TV show from 1989. Tony Twist and his three children - thirteen year old twins Pete and Linda and nine year old Bronson - move to an old lighthouse on the rugged Australian Coast. They soon discover that the lighthouse, and the outhouse, are haunted. We took time out to visit the lighthouse. I was quite excited at this cultural find. We discovered it existence along the Great Ocean Road through word of mouth, not through the Lonely Planet. This was a similar case with Max's holiday home from the first Mad Max film. This too was along the GOR - it was a large beach-side structure on a wooden stilt. Like most of the locations we have seen over the last few days they bear no resemblance to what you see on TV. However when you view the days photos on the computer the locations take on a familiar feel.
The weather was sunny, the landscape parched and baron. I couldn't help but compare the scenery to back home. With my preconceptions of Australian beaches I was finding hard to accept that this was better than most Cornish coastal areas I have seen back in the UK (obviously when the sun is shining!) We stopped off at the world famous Bells beach - also world famous for the end scene in point break. Ju romanced about surfing at some point in Australia. For me the reality was quite different. The beaches had no life guard service at this time of year in some of the remote areas. The rip tides were very strong in this neck of the world. The sea was freezing cold, with one local pointing out to Ju you are mad to go in the water. And of course as Ju mentioned yesterday there are Great Whites swimming around - with a recent news report of a fatal attack on an English chap. Although statistically I have more chance of getting involved in a RTA my ingrained fear from watching Jaws as a child along with viewing Great Whites in South Africa was to be my primary excuse for not going surfing. My secondary excuse was the sport involves to much effort for too little reward. A coastal walk and a beer sounds much better!
I surfed the internet back at camp. We had stopped off in Lorne. Being a fan of the Mad Max movies - some may argue these movies had influenced my driving style back home - I quickly learned that the first movie had been filmed in and around the Melbourne area, and in particular near Geelong. I was a little gutted to have discovered this the day after we had driven through the area. My consoling feeling was the location would have probably not resembled what I had seen in the movies some 30 years ago. According to the website many of the locations had changed - plus it would have bored Ju to death looking at road bridges and intersections. Although it may have been a good punishment for her tetchy mood all day yesterday. She has understandably been on tender hooks all day yesterday waiting on any news of her sister giving birth. The tension was increased yesterday as I had used up all our mobile broadband uploading holiday photos. I didn't want to repeat the data under use like when we were travelling in New Zealand - I hate waste. It didn't take long to find a shop that sold the top up voucher... but in female terms this was an eternity.
We enjoyed the evening sun. Ju reading her book whilst I uploaded to to the blog. Ju cooked a smashing tea whilst I chatted with Mum and Dad over the internet. It was like having them over for dinner as we munched on our jacket potatoes filled with tuna and sweet corn. This leg of our travels was turning out to be more relaxed. We watch some pre-recorded shows on the laptop before some shut eye. I woke in the night for the obligatory camping wee at 3.30am. This gave me the opportunity to check the internet for any baby news - still waiting baby bell! :-)
