Boats, waiting, waiting, more waiting, hot and sweaty, boat ride again - going on and on and on. When will we ever get to Cambodia?
That just about sums up the day - we did have a brief visit at a ridiculous o'clock in the morning to a fish farm on the Mekong Delta. We saw how the farmers and their families live in a floating home with large nets underneath housing the fish. Trapdoors in the floor opened up to the water beneath so they could feed the fish pellets 3 times a day. There were 3 different breeds of fish and they went a bit mental after having been fed - jumping out the water fighting for the pellets and splashing all of us unsuspecting tourists. We then had a half hour stop to see a local community and look at their muslim school etc and to sample some of their homemade coconut pancakes, but that's about where the good bit ends.
We got 2 boats - one to the Cambodian border where we had to wait 3 hours (having been told we would only be waiting 1 hr) and then another boat for 6 hours directly to Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital. The journey did seem to go on and on and the seats were true Asian seats designed for little people. Most of the travellers went onto the roof of the boat to sunbathe but it was too hot for me up there after 10minutes. Amazingly Scott managed to get to sleep but I wasn't so lucky.
We accepted a hotel booking for our arrival off a tout on the boat (despite guessing it was probably some kind of scam, but we were too hot and tired to care). So we were pleased when we arrived at the place and our $15 room did indeed have air-con, and the rooftop restaurant was indeed leafy and chilled. It pretty much made up for having a windowless room! By 8pm I finally felt relaxed and comfortable after a cool shower as I sipped a diet coke on the roof.
