Well....Argentina is definitely winning the "amazing sights of the world" competition at the moment. After the beauty of Iguazu I didn't think I could be more awe struck by anything else. How wrong I was!
Perito Moreno Glacier - I can only think of expletives to describe it at the moment. Wow! Watching it calving i.e. huge chunks of ice breaking off the edge of the glacier, accompanied by explosive noises, and then dropping 80 metres into the seething waters below, is (now) the most incredible thing I've seen. I'm not sure my heart can take any more! Of course, we had the comedy of watching it for 15 minutes without anything happening. As soon as we decided to move.... yes, you guessed it.... spectacular sights and ear-splitting sounds occurred! After the third time of that happening we stood still, very still, until the next part broke off. We were more than recompensed by the wait too....as what appeared to be half of the glacier face fell off into the water followed by the slabs behind. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!
Well, now I've finished ranting.... The journey from Punta Arenas then on to Puerto Natales followed by El Calafate was pretty straight forward. Managed to see arctic foxy things alongside lots of sheep, roadrunners and the seemingly endless wilds of Patagonia. I met up with Haley (met in BA at language school) and her friend Nicola. I had been hoping to persuade them to go back to Puerto Natales with me to "do" Torres Del Paine but my brainwashing powers went un-needed as they'd planned to do it already. We spent yesterday walking on the glacier (with the help of our lovely guide, Carlos) and then watching the spectacle I've blathered on about above! We joined up with other "travellers" for an evening of fine wine (ahem!) and travel plan discussions... Then we stopped kidding ourselves and went out to the local, ok only, bar with George and Andy. Much fun was had by all, especially if the hangover I've got today is anything to go by!
Off back to Natales tomorrow to prepare for a little jaunt into the national park. Can't wait! Hope you're all well. I've added lots of lovely photos - let me know what you think!
Thinking of you all lots! S x
