Our flight from Medan to Kuala Lumpur only took 1 hour and was a hassle free journey! When we got to Kuala Lumpur airport we booked a bus to the city centre for a cheap price except we had to wait an hour so Ady went off to the golden arches to get us some food! We booked a backpackers place in China Town for one night which turned out to be really good, the room was fairly big and had been kitted out in some IKEA furniture. We asked if we could book for the next 2 nights but unfortunately it was already booked which meant we had to start looking for other places in the area. We came across book orange and their rooms looked okay on the pictures except when we got to the room we had bunk beds and the room was tiny like a prison cell! We managed to pay extra for a double room but even that was small! China town itself was actually really good. We had some great food from the street stalls and there was a big night market with all your knock-offs! Ady bought a watch for himself off one of the stalls but half way through the haggling the stall owner got a tip off on his walkie-talkie that customs were there. We've never seen a whole market close their stalls in 3 minutes flat before and it was quite a sight! Subsequently Ady got his watch for quite a good price!
The shopping in Kuala Lumpur is AMAZING especially if you have the money to spend! Unfortunately we didn't but that didn't stop me dragging Ady around the 10 shopping malls in the city centre! While I was dragging Ady around he spotted a gym in one of the shopping malls and so that was where I left him for a few hours while I carried on looking in Top shop, Mango, Zara etc! We then found a cinema were we watched the new Batman film which was actually pretty good and then Nandos! It was a great day for both of us me shopping, Ady finally getting his workout hit, good film and Nandos to top it off!
The next day we went to the twin towers to try and get to the viewing bridge which is in the middle of both the towers and connects them together, but when we got there all the tickets had been given out already as they only have something like 1000 tickets per day and apparently people queue up from 8 in the morning to get their hands on them! We saw a sign for the aquarium so decided to go there instead. It was a good aquarium but not as good as seeing it for real in the sea!
The same day we went to the bus depot to buy a ticket for Singapore. Inside the bus depot there are about 20 kiosks all selling tickets to various places and it was manic with people trying to take you to their kiosk and people shouting at you left right and centre! We picked a kiosk and enquired about a ticket and was told it would be 35 Malaysian Riel. I then decided to go to another one just to see if it would be the same and I was told 30 Riel. We went to the cheaper one to buy the ticket and after some confusion over the time s the buses departed we finally had our tickets although the girl behind the desk kept smiling which made us a little suspicious. The tickets had the bus company on with a platform number and time on it which we checked by going to the platform to see if the bus company had buses from there which it did.
The next day we went to the platform 15 minutes before the departure time and waited for 30 minutes. There were a lot of local people also waiting on our platform and a bus eventually turned up and we all started to get on but when we showed our ticket we were told it wasn't that bus it would be the next one. So we waited another 20 minutes until another bus from the same company turned up but when we tried to get on that bus it turned out surprise surprise it wasn't going to Singapore! So we started having our doubts about whether there was an actual bus to Singapore especially as there was not a single other person on the platform waiting for a bus! I spoke to the lad that was collecting the tickets on the bus that had turned up and he said he would help us find out where it was when he had finished what he was doing. He went off then came back with the excuse that our bus had broken down and we would have to pay extra to get a different bus to Singapore that left in an hour! Well I was so annoyed and I tried my best to put our point across that we weren't paying extra as it wasn't our fault the bus had "broke down" but in the end all the arguing doesn't seem to get you anywhere and the obvious language barrier kicks in where suddenly they can't understand English, so we ended up having to pay extra to get a different bus with another company. It left me fuming that the girl had obviously known there wasn't a bus to Singapore that day when we booked it!
After all the hassle of the bus drama we finally got to Singapore 6 hours later. I had looked on the internet for accommodation before we got there but there was nothing left apart from one backpackers place in Little India. We were told on arrival that there was only room in their 20 bed dorm! We had no choice but to take it as everywhere else was booked up already. That night before bed we were giggling like school children as this was the first time we had had to sleep in bunk beds and it felt like we were on a school trip! It was also strange not having your own space to put your things and chill out. We went to bed at 11:00pm and we were still awake when it was time to get up! It was the worst sleep EVER! We knew we would have to sleep in a dorm sooner or later but I completely forgot and didn't contemplate that there could and probably would be a walker, talker, stalker and snorer in the room!
In the night we had a guy come in around 1 in the morning and go over to the girl who was in the next bunk bed. He woke her up then started to have a full blown conversation about the day's events and if she would go out with him that night for a drink (even though she was in bed and it was 1 in the morning!).When she said she was staying put he started asking what she was doing the next day and if they could go out then instead! I was really biting my lip because I was going to shout something at them both but thought I better not as it's our first time in a dorm, and we weren't sure what the proper dorm etiquette was, if people actually tell others off for talking too loud! The next day I found out Ady was thinking exactly the same as me and we had a laugh about it! Funnily enough it was the same girl who was being stalked that started sleep talking too in a foreign language which also made us laugh the next day as we had both been woken up by her sleep talking too! The most annoying thing though about the dorm was people coming in and out the room all night long till 5 in the morning then people getting up at 7 and I also now have a hatred for plastic bags as there's always someone trying to find toiletries or get their clothes out of the plastic space saver bags!
Anyway we managed 2 nights there before we thought enough is enough we need some sleep and we also wanted to move to another area of the city as little India wasn't the nicest of areas and didn't have much going on.
We went to China Town for the day and found the only place that had a vacancy there called backpackers Inn. They had a double room for a similar price as the dorm but the room was tiny! We decided to move to the new place so that we could get some sleep and have our own place to keep our stuff. China Town in Singapore was probably the nicest China Town that we have seen so far with a nice chilled out market no knock off stuff and some nice shops and restaurants. Singapore is also the cleanest city that you will ever see, it really does make a nice change and makes you not want to drop any litter. The transport system is also brilliant here and very efficient you can get everywhere on the tube system for reasonably cheap.
On the fourth day we took a trip to Sentosa Island which is a manmade island with several beaches and basically lots of fun things for kids to do although most of it is quite tacky. You can get a cable car over to the island to take in the views which is what we did then we headed to the beach for a bit of a sunbathe. The beach was just like an American beach with lots of volleyball nets and hundreds of players! We stayed there for a few hours then we found what we should have found earlier Café Del Mar where it was all happening!
We decided to look around the city a bit the next day and went to a place called Clarke Quay which is an ultra trendy area by a river. There were lots of bars and restaurants there including a Hed Kandi, fashion TV and hooters bars to name a few and a bar called the clinic were you sit in gold painted wheelchairs outside with a stainless steel table and your drink gets put into a drip and you drink it out of that! It was really quiet in the day here but nice to walk around. We then went to the town centre were again there was about 10-15 malls but most of them were too expensive for us to spend any money in!
All in all we really liked Kuala Lumpur and Singapore as cities as there's lots to do in both cities and lots of different culture although 4 days was probably enough for us in them both.
We got to the airport on the fourth of August ready to leave our South East Asia adventure and looking back we can't believe how much we have seen and done in 3 months and how fast it's gone although it seems like ages ago when we left!
Now it's the start of a new adventure in New Zealand…….
