This is my one and only post from Chile! We are only in Chile for a short time, three day to be exact. We leave San Pedro de Atacama tomorrow morning to go to Salta, Argentina, which is the last country on my trip.
Chile has been great so far, warmer then Bolivia which I'm very happy about. The weather in Bolivia gave me a cold so I'm hoping the little bit warmer weather will help me get better. We didn't arrive in San Pedro on the forth until evening so the rest of that day was spent finding supper and booking a tour for the next day.
Yesterday, the fifth was such a busy day. We started out with a geyser field tour which started at 5 in the morning. So for all you sask people that's 3 in the morning your time haha. So it was an early morning, but I think it was worth it. Our first stop was just out in the open away from the city so we could look at the night sky. Its so beautiful everytime you look at it here. It's so clear and there are sooo many stars its unbelievable. We were told that the reason the night sky is so beautiful here is that there its no humidity, we're at a high altitude and there is no pollution. It was such a pretty site, I wish taking a picture of it would work so I could bring it back for all of you too see. Especially Quinn cause he's always saying how much nicer the night sky is at the farm instead if Saskatoon becuase you can actually see the stars. Haha well the farm has nothing on this night sky. There is so many stars and its incredible to see. The guide pointed out some constelations like the southern cross and we could even see our neighboring galaxy Andromeda.
Next we drove to a geyser field which is the third largest in the world, and the highest. It was a cool site with lots of geysers. There was a lot of steam. We got breakfast while we were there and it was so cool because we got hot chocolate milk that the guide put in one of the geysers to heat up! It tasted so good and it was so nice and warm.
After the geyser field our last stop was a hot springs river which wasn't even that hot and it was yucky. I didn't like it at all. But the rest of the tour made up for it.
On our way back to San Pedro our guide pointed out a type of cactus that looks like a seat cushion and he told its the Spanish name, which I can't remember, but it literally translates to seat for the mother-in-law. Which is kind of funny, but pretty mean haha.
Once we were back at our hostel we had a couple hour break before we had another tour.
Our second tour of the day was the Valle de la Luna tour, or Moon Valley tour. This was a pretty cool tour, lots of nice sites to see and get pretty pictures of.
We stared out in the Moon Valley which is famous for its resemblance to the surface of the moon. It's made up of a variety of different land scapes and colours. There is multiple mountain ranges making up the moon valley, one is even a salt mountain range, and there are volcanoes, rivers and gorges too. This was a very interesting place and I got some great pictures. I thought that the moon valley looked like all the landscapes of where I've already been mixed together. There were mountains and salt like in Bolivia and those were mixed in with sand dunes like in Peru. It was pretty cool.
Our next stop on the tour was the Great Dune Path. Which is just a giant sand dune on the side of a mountain. We climbed in and from the top you could see so much, it was beautiful. From the top we could see what is called the Amphi theatre which is part of the Cordillera de la Sal (salt mountain range) and is named such becuase it looks like a Roman theatre. It was a pretty neat looking rock formation that's for sure.
One of the other sites we saw was called the Three Maries. It's a rock formation shaped by extreme erosion and is named such becuase it looks like three different poses of the virgin Mary. It is approximately a million years old.
We made two more stops. We made a brief stop in Dead Valley which was nice and it was given its name because of an acient tribe that used to live in it was massacred by the Spanish. So that's kind of a depressing name I thought.
Our last stop was a look out point where we could see so much of the moon valley. It was beautiul and I got some great pictures.
So yesterday was such a full day I was so tired by the end of the day, but it was good.
Today is our last day in Chile, as we leave tomorrow, so we're spending the day catching up with blogs and pictures, doing laundry haha and we are going to do some souvenir shopping too.
The money here messes with my mind a little bit. It's very colourful which is cool. But one dollar is 660 Pecos and its so weird paying for stuff be because everything is thousands of Pecos. And when they say thousand of Spanish its mill. So they say like 5 mill so it sounds like its so much money. Haha so that's a weird part about Chile for me.
Our Chile stay has been short, but sweet so far and I'm looking forward to moving on to Argentina.
