We left Adelaide to start our road trip on the Great Ocean Road and after driving for only one day in grey, rainy weather we hoped the next day would be better. We stayed in a little place called Halls Gap which is right near the Grampians, which is a good place to see waterfalls and do some walks. The next morning it was still raining but we thought that seeing as we were already there we would suck it up and go on the walks where we saw pretty scenery and nice waterfalls. We then headed towards the B100 which is known as the Great Ocean Road to get us to Melbourne. After driving for another few hours and the rain continuing we decided it might be best to cut our losses and go straight to Melbourne and in a week or so come back and do the route again. There were just a few things we needed to check out first, like whether we could return our car that day and pick it up for a different two days seeing as it was pre paid, and also if we could go and stay with Seema's friend from Wednesday instead of Friday. Both those things were fine so we drove the whole route straight instead of stopping off at all the scenic lookouts. We got to Melbourne just as rush hour hit in the evening which wasn't fun for Sheens who was driving in the city. We managed to manoeuvre ourselves around the city centre and sort out the car so we could pick it up again on the 14th June. So we headed to St. Kilda, the area Seema's friend lived and set up camp there.
We had to get up relatively early on the 4th June so we got to the city in time to return the car, we then got on the free bus around the city.
On the 7th June we went down to Phillip Island with Mandy and her boyfriend to camp for the evening, so we drove down there, pitched our tents and went to the Nobbies lookout, went to Cowes the local town to get food for the night. We got back to the campsite which was right beside the beach watched the sunset and then proceeded to cook dinner. We would just like to add that it was freezing so we had to cook in the shelter of the porch. During the evening the rain started and did not stop so when it came to bed time, the tent that we were in had puddles inside as the wind had taken the guy lines out!! We were not impressed so decided to sleep in the car. Although that sounds really uncomfortable we were so warm!! We had a great nights sleep compared to Mandy in the cold tent!! The next morning we got up, packed away and headed for Mandy's mum's house where we were given lunch and a heater to defrost our feet.
We were in Melbourne until the 17th June, these are the things we got up to….after the free bus, we went on the free tram around the city, Seems does like trams, we went out on a couple of nights out and we visited Captain Cooks Cottage and spent lots of time wandering around the city.
So that pretty much took us up to the 12th June, this was when Vikki and Raiyna (Seema's friends from Uni) came to Melbourne. So that evening we went to and AFL game, which was muchos fun. On the 13th we did the very British thing of going on the Neighbours tour, we went to the street and to the studios. That evening Mandy and Sheens threw Seems a party in honour of her birthday the week after. Fun times was had by all, lots of food was consumed and Seems polished off more alcohol that night than she probably has the whole time we have been away.
On the 14th we collected the car from the city picked Vikki and Raiyna up and headed back to the Great Ocean Road, we both shared the driving and stopped off at loads of lookouts along the way. We arrived at our hostel, had a power nap and then headed for London Bridge, The Grotto, The Arch, Gibson Steps and the 12 Apostles for sunset. We then headed back to the hostel for dinner and a couple of films. The next morning we went for a few walks around the Loch and Gorge and then headed back to Melbourne through Torquay for some shopping.
We got back to the flat made dinner and then headed to the city to take some night skyline photos.
So our last day in Melbourne we went up the 360° Tower to see the view, then we went out for dinner as it was Vikki and Raiyna's last night day then headed back to pack our bags.
We left the next morning (17th June) at 7.30am to start our road trip back to Sydney. We drive more or less 750km to a place called Batemans Bay where we stayed the night. We stopped in some scenic places along the way to swap drivers.
We left the next morning and headed to Canberra, we didn't think we could come to Australia and not visit the capital so we literally drove in, took a picture of the Parliament House and drove out again. There was nothing else really to see. We arrived in Sydney late afternoon, we were staying with a friend of Sheens about 15 minutes from the city. So we got there and then had to drive back to the city to drop the car off so we didn't have to drive in the morning. We then took Emer out for dinner as we were staying with her. The next day we went into Sydney city for the last time, did our last minute jobs and then headed back to pack for the plane journey, as we were leaving on the 20th for New Zealand. We cooked dinner that night for Emer and Scott watched a film and got ourselves ready for the very early morning.
So that is it from Australia, the next time you hear from us we will be in the land of Kiwi's.
