So we were in Bunderberg for the day, on a bank holiday and the town came to a major standstill. But we only had one objective, to visit the Rum Distillery. So we had to check out of our hostel and they stupidly did not allow us to store our luggage there, so we had to go and ask the PADI shop across the road. We then had a 40 minute walk to the distillery and then we had a lovely tour around it, with lots of tasters after it!!
We then had to get back so we could pick our luggage up, so we had to sit in the bus station as there was no where else open for us to store our luggage when another Greyhound bus driver saw us waiting and said he would keep our luggage in the greyhound lock up so we could go and do some stuff whilst waiting for our bus (which wasn't until 10pm!!) So we went for a wander around the dead town where it started to pour down with rain so we took shelter under the supermarket, but the rain didn't let up so we snuck back into the hostel we were staying at and had dinner and watched 'Rock and Rolla' we timed this well because it finished just in time for us to catch the bus. So we got on board our second overnight journey, our destination was Airlie Beach.
We arrived at about 9am on the 5th May and got checked into the Koala hostel, this was the company we were doing our Whitsundays tour with the following day. As soon as we thought about leaving and heading outside for a mooch about the town, the rain started and didn't let up for the rest of the day, this was not cool!! We were hoping for really nice weather as sailing in the rain is not cool!!
So on the morning of the 6th we got our bags ready for what we wanted to take with us and then we had the morning to ourselves, the rain had let up but the clouds were still loitering in the sky. We then made our way down to the marina and got checked onto the boat and were given our security numbers. we boarded the boat and got chatting to two American girls, Amanda and Veronica and three guys from England, Nick, Rob and Rich. We had a two hour ride across to Adventure Island, our home for the next two nights. We arrived and decided on our dorms, we were sharing with Amanda, Veronica a German and a random Australian (who won this trip in a poker game) we got into our room and the bathroom door did not close so we asked to change rooms, for then the second room not to lock, so we finally got upgraded to a family room with a double bed, 2 singles and a set of bunk beds, we claimed the double bed, the best thing about the room was the mini fridge to store our alcohol!!
We then went for dinner and Seems was glad she was a vego as she had the better meal!! We then went back to our room for some pre party drinking but ended staying there for too long, there was a garbage bag party in the bar, so we all dressed up and headed to the bar, but the party wasn't really happening so we just went back to our room and had some more drinks!! We got up the following morning and headed out on the boat for some snorkelling, but those damn clouds were there again and the rain came down, so when we got in the water the visibility wasn't great. which was a shame. we got back on the boat and headed to Whitehaven Beach. That was the most choppiest journey we had, a lot of people were not very well, and this is when they served lunch. So we arrived at the most beautiful beach and for those two hours we were there, the sun came out whoop!! We then left to head back to the Island, where we pretty much had dinner and drinks in our room before hitting the sack.
The following morning, the 8th we had to check out and make our way back to the mainland, the weather was still really bad so we didn't bother to snorkel as the visibility was really bad again. We then got back to Airlie and had dinner with the people from our boat.
We got up on the 9th to go to Townsville, where we stayed there for a night, as the weather was still cloudy we didn't know whether we wanted to got to Magnetic Island. But as it didn't rain that day we decided we would got the next day. So we got the ferry across on the 10th morning and headed for our hostel. checked in and went for a wander. we decided that we would rest a car, as it was the done thing to do, on our travels we noticed that there was a old school style VW Beetle, for those of you that don't know, this is Seema's dream car, so we had to have that. We booked that for the next day. It rained that evening so we stayed in as there weren't many places to go. We got up on the 11th to pick up the Beetle for the owner to tell us that the reverse popped out, so we had to hold it in. So we were on our way, but had to stop at our hostel to get pillows, so we could then see out the windscreen!! Yes get all your short jokes out the way. So we drove all round the Island stopping off for some walks along the way.
The car was very old, so had no power steering, and it was a good job there were two of us as it was necessary for one of us to hold the gear stick in reverse when we needed too. We also had to stop mid driving to put the soft roof up as the heavens opened!! But it was fun driving it around, lots of people were taking photos of the car whilst we were driving!!
We left the following morning to catch the ferry back to Townsville, and then we were straight on the Greyhound to Cairns. We had a new bus that was being tested the seat fully reclined, it was a pleasant journey and the driver also put 'Ghostrider' on for us.
