I thought I had visited most of the UK, but felt a bit embarrassed when travellers from foreign lands would often recommend that I should visit Bath. So here I am for a city break with Helen to see what all the fuss is about.
I'll say one thing - those travellers can't have been on the budget I was on. It's very expensive, even by English standards. But in for a penny, in for a pound; we made sure we didn't miss out on any of the must see sights, such as the Abbey, the Royal Crescent, the Roman baths, the thermal spa and of course Sally Lunn's tea rooms for lunch and a Bath bun.
I must admit though that the Roman Baths are not to be missed. In the large complex, you can really imagine what life was like 2000 years ago in this part of Albion (at least for the Romans anyway); and to help imagine being a Roman, what better way than to visit the thermae afterwards; particularly the rooftop terrace. I was quite shocked to discover that this complex only opened in 2006, after a near 30-year period with no facilities for taking a plunge in Britain's only natural, thermal spring water.
