OK, despite being back in Scotland and about 3 months behind on this blog, I am determined to finish it!
Puno, Peru: 30th March-3rd April 2011
To get to Puno, we took a 3hour bus (£2,50) from Copacabana, Bolivia. We had to cross the border on foot and meet the bus at the other side- all very organised and easy which is not always the case.
Puno is not really that nice a place to visit, the only 'attraction' worth going for is the floating islands of the Uros tribe. Though there are some nice bars and restaurants along Avenida Lima. We ended up bumping into friends we'd made in Bolivia so we caught up over some drinks. Freezing here- wearing pretty much everything i own!
UROS: we took the boat (no accidents this time) across to see the floating islands and the families living on them. This was an amazing insight into how different people's ways of life are. I cannot quite believe how they adapt and live happily on these floating reeds in the middle of Lake Titicaca. The wee children were so cute in their traditional bolivian clothes and we got shown how they build their islands and how they have to keep adding new layers of reeds to keep dry and afloat. Absolutely amazing! The government offer support to these families which i was pleased to hear- for example, the only way they could get light for going to the toilet at night was to light a match but this had caused a few fires due to eveything being made of reed and a few children had died, so the government gave each island a solar panel and this has made a huge difference to their safety.
