Arrival in Telly-Tubby land!!! The Cameron Highlands are unbelievable! This country is so mix-matched, how does it get these massive hills right in the middle and go from being so warm to being quite chilly, just in the middle?! I suppose we are quite far up in the Highlands when we finally arrive at our destination - Fathers Guesthouse, which was lovely. Definitely the best place we've stayed, lovely triple room - big room - and enough bed room for all of us. We had to share a shower but it was actually hot water for the first time in about a month - AND really clean which is a massive plus as most places aren't. The corridors to our rooms remind me of the Shining, the impluse to whisper 'red rum' to Claire-Lou when we walked up them was too much..she wasn't impressed, bit scary!
The Cameron Highlands themselves are gorgeous, the sceneary is amazing. Just hills and hills full of tea!!! Enough tea to definitely keep my mum satisfied I reckon! The town in the Highlands looks like a Swiss village but is full of Indian restaurants - very random, but I've got used to mix-match of everything in South-East Asia now. The Highlands also grows 60% of the fruit, veg and flowers for Malaysia and Singapore so it was really colourful and pretty. Girly comments over! We decided that this would be our place to have a good detox so the first night just walked into town, had some nice food and watched a film in the dorm. Me and Anne-Marie had a Jenga-off to see who could be the Jenga Queen.. wild girls hey!!
We also met a boy called Tesh in the communal lounge, my token gay BF had found me, attract the gays but not the straights hey!! He was lovely and we all decided to go for dinner the next night along with Annabella, a girl we met on the bus. She's 19 and has been travelling Asia on her own, I cant even imagine that I would have been grown up enough to travel alone when I had just left school...I'm not even coping that well with it now!!
The next day we did an organised trip of all the plantations, rose gardens, butterfly farm and strawberry fields. It sounds slightly boring but it was actually really good fun. The rose garden had loads of random fairytale things in it and was really pretty. The butterfly farm had lots of insects we could hold and snakes and lizards (see pictures!)...I thought I was a Butterfly expert or something and managed to get a butterfly on my hand from a flower...but then realised it was actually dead and that was way it had not resisted! I dont think I killed it but it did disturb me slightly!! Later a live one landed on our hands so I felt slightly better! The Strawberry farm had the best strawberries ever tasted and strawberry ice cream...and strawberry shakes...and jam...hmmmmm...was a stawberry-addicts dream come true!! We didnt hang around at the bee farm long as they are actually swarming all over you and none of us really fancied getting stung so we just legged it to the nearest market to have a wander round. The tea plantation was probably the best. The fields you can see in the picture are literally fields and fields of tea plants, it resembles Telly-Tubby land we think! The factory tour was quite interesting, all the machines reminded me off the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory..but unfortunately there were no little dwarves working there (that would have made it interesting!) nor any little songs the workers sang..infact the workers didnt look like they fancied singing at all! The tour guide was really funny in a slightly Hilter-scary way, he kept shouting at everyone to hurry up and to listen and told anyone off it they took a photo when he didnt say they could - issues I think....I whispered (obviously stage whisper) to the Taylors that he scared me but didnt look around to see where he was and obviously he was right next to me...I think he enjoyed hearing it though.
The second and last night in the Cameron Highlands we went out for dinner but only after we discovered that we can buy wine! You have no idea how much I'm missing Rose...and Magners...and everything else we cant buy here! So we had a few bottles of wine with our meal...which led to us meeting another group of travellers who said that (as everything in Cameron Highlands shuts down at midnight - what is with that?!) we could go to their guest house campfire and drink there. We strolled over there armed with our usual bottle of vodka and found a few people were staying there we met at our Islands beach party a few days earlier! Small world travelling! We didnt stay long however as the owner asked us to leave! Something about taking the mick drinking our own drinks in his guesthouse...suppose he has a point! We went back to our guesthouse slightly tipsy...and decided that since Anne-Marie had travelled around with a pack of cards in her backpack and we had not even touched them and since all the other travellers seem to always be playing cards (is there nothing better to do really?!) that we would play...drunk...We started to play Rummy but half way through realised that Anne-Marie had been playing a completely different game to the rest of us so gave up...then imposed our drunk selves on a group of definitely public school boys and attempted to play a game of 'Cheat' with them...except we kept cheating at Cheat and not really getting it, so much so they ended up just going to bed! Oops! We later bumped into them in KL and they looked scared..god knows what we were saying/terroising them with!
The Cameron Highlands were gorgeous, definietely the most beautiful place we stayed but far to quite and relaxed for us so we packed up our backpacks (realised that Danger Wheels was on the way out, one wheel down and two rips - praying it lasts to Oz as dont think I can cope with one on my back!) and headed off on the bus to Kuala Lumpar for lots of shopping - credit cards at the ready!
