I have been in Iceland for two hours now. I landed two hours ago in Arborg. Iam in an airport shuttle heading to the lodge in Vatnajoull National Park. This is my second to last leg of my journey. I cannot wait to explore this park. This park is huge, 12,000 sq km. The park makes up 13% on the country. The largest glacier in Iceland, the Vatnajokull is located here in the park. The most powerful waterfall in Europe, the Dettifoss, is also here in the park. Now I am happy that I packed all those heavy bags with my winter stuff. Without that I probably would have already frozen to death.
Breakfast at the airport was a bowl of Hafragrautur. This is the local oatmeal. I'm told that the local children have to take their oatmeal with a spoonful of lysi. This is cod liver oil and it tastes as disgusting as it sounds. But it is necessary here to prevent the disease rickets. Vitamin D is needed for teeth, muscles, and bones. I think I will be OK for a few more days without any vitamin D because I can't stand the thought of taking more cod liver oil.
The Krona is the money currency here. It is 49 ISK or Krona to enter the park. That is about 50 cents in the US. Not a bad dea.!
First I'd like to visit Vatnajokull. It is the largest glacier in Europe. There are seven volcanoes located under this glacier and most of them are still active. Then, I'd like to see Askja. This is the largest and highest volcanic caldera lake in Europe. The lake if 500 ft deep. In recent years, this lake has been free of ice. Many scientists are studying this lake and the volcano that is below it. Finally, I'd like to visit DettifossIt is on the river Jokulsa a Fjollum. The water moves at 500 cubic meters a second, similar to Niagra Falls.
Of course, I hope to see some reindeer. Maybe even get to ride one!
