We arrived in Montevideo at around 2 in the morning to be greeted at the hostel by a Mike Tyson lookalike that didn't speak a word of English. The hostel was filthy and dingy as f***. He demanded are money up front which was far enough but then gave us no change. Tyson showed us to are room that had only 1 double bed. We were s***ting it so much at this point we would have taken the room and left it at that.
Tyson disappeared and returned with a long haired crackhead looking fellow. Between them they tried to assemble a single bed and after a lot of f***ing around they eventually did and left us to it. The lock on the door could be pushed open by the slightest breeze, we were not in a good place at this moment in time. There was air con in the room but it didn't work when the light was off. So we went to sleep in a sweaty s*** whole.
The next day we got up and done one out of there as quick as to see Montevideo believe me this does not take long. We walked though the main square that is suppose to be full of great buildings without even noticing. The town did not have much to offer at all, we were by the coast so decided to find a beach. The only beach near by was s***, fake sand any muddy water, so we decided to return to the hostel.
We meet the owner that spoke English, we told us where some good bars were so we got a few beers to get are mind off the singe whole we were living. The place was so dirty you had a shower and still felt rank. We did find a good Irish bar that made us feel more positive about NYE.
NYE, Montevideo is famous for the massive yearly water fight the weather was good so we went to get involved. Walking down the street was too funny people from balconies were soaking the masses in the street with buckets of water, women were being especially targeted, good tactics. This went on all day, we returned to the hostel to get on it buzzing for the night ahead.
We went out about half 11 into a ghost town, it was so eery like something out of a horror film the streets were dead, bars and clubs were closed. We didn't have a clue where everyone had gone, the only place we found open was a restaurant we sat outside and saw in the new year completely bemused at how dead the capital city of Uruguay was.
We saw mike Tyson in the bar, who turned out to be alright even though we spoke no English, the guy was always laughing at nothing. We followed him praying he would take us to a bar or club that was open we didn't care how s*** it was we were in no place to be picky. We did find a club and it was terrible but hey were in South America, so that was NYE in Montevideo, exciting.
Montevideo is hard enough to find something to do when everywhere is open, new years day and the day after everywhere was closed. We filled the days playing table tennis that got addictive and to competitive. The day we were leaving for Punta Del Este could not come soon enough.
This is the review I was going to give on hostel world but we couldn't find the email.
No clean bed sheets, the room
was revolting. The kitchen was vile and unusable. On hostel world then hostel manager claims you get breakfast what he actually means Is you can use the kitchen to make your own. On arrival we paid 200 pesos more we was told this was because they had no change, we never saw the cash again. There's a random drug addict that wonders round and plays loud music all day and night. The Cleanliness of the bathroom is below average I was there for five days and in that time no cleaning happened. The wi fi is temperamental.
The manager has no respect for his guests and is very loud threw the night. I would defiantly recommend you avoid this place don't let the good location fool you. This is defiantly not the place to meet people and have a good experience.
