We took a slight detour from the journey south we had made 10 years ago and headed off the main highway to MissionBeach. This is a really lovely spot and we contemplated whether we could return here after seeing Avril but decided the addition kilometerage we'd clock up, and time, were not on our side. This is an area where Cassowarys are regularly spotted but we were to be disappointed. If we'd hoped to see any as we headed back to the Bruce Highway this was to be a no no because, as we were leaving Mission Beach the sky had taken on a dark & thunderous appearance. Very soon it was a major thunderstorm with lightning flashing overhead, rain coming down in sheets and overhanging branches falling off trees by the roadside. Great care was needed to see the road ahead but also to avoid fallen branches. The storm continued for some time and around us were low, low clouds, dark skies, thunder & lightning as we headed south. We hadn't seen much rain since May but this certainly brought it home to us that we were now on the wet North East Coast and goes to prove it's not always sunny in Australia. Also the rain gave Annie a good wash - for free!We arrived in Townsville and thanks to excellent directions found our way to Avril's house - there she was after 10 years waiting and waving furiously outside her house as we drew up. It was really great to see her again and we had a lovely weekend with her, Heath(er) - her son, and dogs Libby & Zak. She treated us to a tour of Townsville's main attractions and it gave a positive impression of the city. Views from Castle Hill (when did Australia have castles?!?) across to MagneticIsland were lovely. Some lovely food at Avril's and an night out in town satisfied our culinary desires.
Avril is on a permanent mission to rescue dogs and by co-incidence while we were having a snack at lunchtime on Saturday, a dog wandered up to us without an obvious owner. It seemed well looked after and had a lovely nature but despite efforts in the restaurant and pub over the road we couldn't find its owner. However, some possible directions offered by punters looked promising and with a dog lead that Avril keeps in the car for such a moment, we were off being led by the dog to a house a few streets away. A knock at the door brought a young woman - with 2 kiddies, another large dog and a puppy - who told us that the dog's owner had 'done a runner three weeks ago'. With details exchanged Avril is sure she has a friend who will take and look after the 'stray' dog. We're looking forward to hearing the outcome.
