We'd allowed ourselves two full days in Iguacu (Brazilian spelling) because we wanted to see the Falls from both the Argentinean and Brazilian sides as they both give totally different perspectives. We could have arranged a tour through our hostel but as we prefer doing things for ourselves and the guide books had indicated that it was easy enough to get there, and across the border, by bus. So in the morning we went over to the bus station and jumped on the bus for Foz do Iquacu, the Brazilian town near the Falls. We knew that we'd have to get off the bus at the border posts to go through immigration and that the bus would probably not wait until everyone was back on board. Immigration procedures at both posts were quick and easy but we did have a while, and some uncertainty, waiting for another bus. When one came it was a different company and we had to pay again. Foz do Iguacu is a long way from the Falls so we had to get off on the main road, cross the other side and wait for yet another bus. Thankfully there were a few of us so we were able to support each other in our uncertainty and eventually we flagged one down that took us to the Falls. The Falls themselves are a long way from the entrance to the National Park, and having experienced them the previous day our intention was to take a quick visit and walk before heading back. However, when we arrived at the actual falls and saw what was on offer, we spent a long time enjoying the experience. Whilst most of the Iguacu/Iguazu Falls lie on the Argentinean side, and it is there where you can walk much of the length of them at close quarters, the Brazilian side provides a cinemascopic panoramic view of the Falls. But also it is on the Brazilian side where you seem to be able to get much closer to the 'action' as there are walkways that go into the river from where you can look up and down the Falls way up close. We watched in amazement as tiny swifts flew in and out of the gushing water to their nests in the cliffs behind the Falls. Spectacular and wonderful!! The previous day we'd seen helicopters flying overhead and had wondered if we could fit in a flight. So, after we'd walked the length of the Falls, we headed out of the Park and took a 15 minute flight over the Falls. We'd now seen them by boat from the river, from both sides of the river and from above. Fantastic and awe-inspiring!! Even if we had seen anything else in South America, this alone would have been worth coming for. Our return journey and immigration was again relatively straightforward and we were soon back at our hostel in Argentina after our day out in Brazil (23rd country visited on our journey). Lots of loveEric & Margaret xxxxx
