Detail from "Flight of a thousand cranes"
Another of Ume-san's installations. This one is about peace and is inspired by the store of a young girl, Sadako Sasaki, a survivor of the A-bomb. She was ok for ten years but then suddenly fell ill and, like many others in Hirshima, was diagnosed with leuchemia. Treatment was ineffective but Sadako refused to give up. She believed that if she folded a thousand paper cranes, she would beat the disease. She almost made it. This story still inspires children here and there was a mountain of colourful paper cranes at the foot of Sadako's statue
