Something I was told before I left the UK was a very true piece of advice...things do not run on time in Thailand. I left for Kanchanaburi this morning over an hour and a half later than I was supposed to. Gotta love the Thai time keeping.
Anyhoo, first on the agenda was to stop off at the Floating Markets. I got the distinct impression that I was the only solo traveller on this tour and I was right, still I managed to befriend a couple of Chinese girls, one was called Binda and I think the other one asked me to call her Cookie...I didn't ask.
More noodle soup for breakfast before walking round the river side and watching the boats float past with colourful merchandise to sell perspective tourists. To say that the market was tourist orientated is true but I would like to think this is what it would have been like before tourism took over. It wasn't as hot today but since I had been bitten quite a bit last night I was glad. Binda, Cookie and I walked round the market before coming across a man who wanted me to hold his python...Not a metaphor for something else. There was no way I was touching that giant snake no matter how tame he claimed it was! A little while later we took a speed boat down the river to a little village and sampled some of the more traditional life, I wish I had more time there, it would have been great to go and see the Cobra show. I got chatting to a nice Aussie girl who is staying in the guest house opposite mine. We got separated however, as I was on route to see the Bridge over the River Kwai after lunch.
Arrival in Kanchanaburi took a little longer than I thought it would, at the time I regretted sitting above the wheel since the driving was some what erratic and every bump in the road seemed to warrant me hitting my head on the ceiling. We arrived and had about 2 hours to visit the bridge which to be honest was more than enough time than was needed. Walking down towards the bridge there were a group of people on the left, so being nosey I walked over, to see a guy bottle feeding a baby Leopard. Now usually I would have thought this was cute but to be honest it looked a little cruel. So I carried on. Walked across the bridge and back a couple of times and read about the history and the building etc. There's a museum there too but I ran out of time to see it. It was rather funny, but I was sitting there waiting for the bus and thought to myself it really needs to rain soon...no sooner had those thoughts aired than the heavens opened. I have never seen such heavy rain come down in a short space of time, the rain in the UK is light compared to this! It got really thundery really quickly!
It seemed to take forever to get back to Bangkok, I know I fell asleep a couple of times in between pit stops but I was so tired when I got back that I really didn't do much of anything else other than go to bed early...way to be a party animal!
