Ok. Hitch-hiking is extremely common in NZ, but I hadn't picked anyone up for obvious reasons of safety, axe murders, etc. But at 11am driving out of Milford when I drove past this young woman and her partner standing in the driving rain with this sign - I felt really bad for them. So I turned around and picked them up. Then some other random German guy got in the car, dripping wet (and dripping all over my ipod car system too, thank you very much). He was a bit confused when I turned around towards Te Anau and did not head straight ahead to Milford.
