Sarah and Nicola Matthews' Travels
Hey,
In Ushuaia now which is the most southerly city in the whole world! We are practically in Antarctica now so gone are the short skirts, vest tops and flipflops and in are the hiking trainers, combat trousers, fleeces and waterproof jackets - i look like an imposter! Feel very unlike myself!
Despite being evily cold it is really beautiful down here. The city (which is actually a small town) is surrounded by mountains and is a port town so is really nice. Hundreds of cruise ships seem to stop here so it is full of 'end of the world' tacky souvenirs but its cute.
Yesterday we went to the National Park ' Tierra del Fuego'
which was really amazing despite the hugely bumpy rideup there. The scenery was really amazing with loads of mountains and lakes and we went for a walk along the lake which brought us to the border of chile which was quite amusing as there was just a sign saying 'chile, dont trespass'. The walk was up and down and was a bit perilous but we survived in one piece until Caroline fell on her arse about 2 mins from the end! we felt very vertious though after our walking which was nice after sitting around eating too much over the last few weeks. we rewarded ourselves with a nice hot chocolate which is our new obsession!
In the afternoon we went on a boat trip which was absolutely amazing. we went in the beagle channel - which obviously made me think of dear old Henry! The boat took us to see sea lions first which was so cool, there were hundreds of them all living on a big rock. we got really near and could see them all figting with each other and making funny noises that were like lions roars.
We then went to see a lighthouse which was ok and then we went to my favourite bit. we went to an island that was full on penguins. the boat sailed right on to the island and they didnt even batter an eyelid! They were so cute though and it was so fun to watch them waddling along and swimming in the sea - i definitely want one for a pet!!!
After all that fresh air we were tucked up in bed by about 9.30. Though i did wake up in a state of confusion thinking i had someone lying in my bed - only to find that it was a cat!! nearly died of fright especially as i am not the biggest fan of cats! Nicola and Caroline thought it was hysterical and the b***** wouldnt move so i ended up sleeping in another bed. It is the cat that belongs to the hostel so im hoping its not too flee bitten but even still im not looking forward to bed time tonight!
Today we went to the Martial Glacier which is a few km north of Ushuaia. we had to get a ski chair lift up to it and it would be fair to say that i have never been so cold - despite my new fleece i had earlier purchased! It was ridiculously windy and we thought we were going to fall over so we abandoned ideas of trekking right up to the glacier we just took afew pics, had another hot choc and got the perishing chair lift back down!!
