This has to be one of the most amazing trips we have done!!! We were in a tag along group. This was 4 jeeps with 8 people in each group. We had a briefing before we went that scared the living hell out of everyone. Basically we were all going to get eaten by dingos, bitten by snakes and attacked by jumping spiders. Great!
Met our group of 8 that included 2 scots, 2 nurses and 2 18 year olds that ash referred to as the kids. Everyone in the group was hilarious and we all got on so well luckily!! We were given all our food, alcohol, water and fire wood. Also a menu for the 3 days to help us cook for the 8 of us. 6 of us in our group could drive so lots of taking it in turns to get a go. One of the 'kids' said he had written off two cars already so we were really looking forward to him driving ha.
Caught a ferry to Fraser Island, only took 10mins. On the ferry over we could see hundreds of jelly fish in the sea. We couldn't swim in the sea here either due to sharks and the riptide, Which 'apparently' would drag you out for a kilometre. Out first stop was Lake Mackenzie. This is pretty high up on the island and a very bumpy ride there. It's formed from rain water and there's no drainage system in it. We were asked not to pee in it haha. It was the clearest water I had ever seen. The sand was also pure whit silicon sand. We all attempted a body scrub with and some washed their hair with it. Our group attempted the standard pyramid in the water. We then headed to find our camp. This is when I got to drive, it was so much fun driving on the beach. When you hit the soft sand you're just supposed to go with the steering wheel. It's a weird feeling. I was surprised how far away everything is, about an hour drive to each place. Our camp was cool it was pretty much on the beach but surrounded by electrical fences to stop the dingoes getting in. Camp consisted of loads of two man tents, toilet and shower blocks, eating/ cooking area, camp fires and a 'night club'. This was a shack with an aux cable. When choosing our tents then guys next to us found a giant spider in theirs!!! Someone had also seen a massive snake on the way in!
It was pretty hot back at camp also with loads of Mosquitos. Cooked our first meal together which was very tasty. Then we all got started on our goon (cheap wine). Was a fun night!! Sleeping in the tent was pretty unbearable, no pillow just a backpack to lie on and roasting hot.
The following day we visited champagne pools. These are rock pools which fill with water when the tide comes in and supposedly look like champagnes bubbling. They were pretty fun and quite refreshing. Next we drove onto Indian head. From it you can see into the clear water, we saw sea turtles and even a few sharks. Great views of the sand island too. Headed back to the camp for lunch then to Eli Creek. This is a shallow river of fresh water. It's a bit like a lazy river. Spent the afternoon floating down here. After we visited the Maheno shipwreck. It has 3 floors which are all under the sand and you can only see the top of the boat. It ended up here in 1935, it was being towed to Japan after being brought for scrap metal. It was caught in a cyclone and ended up on the beach.
That evening was another of all cooking together and drinking games. Ended up in the 'night club' which was hilarious.
Our last day we all had to be packed up and out by 8am which was a bit of struggle! That morning we drove to Lake Wabby. It's a 45minute walk to the lake. It's the deepest lake on Fraser Island and is a green/black colour. It's surrounded by masses sand dunes and forests. It's probably one of the prettiest sites on Fraser Island. When you're in the water it's full of small fish that swim around you trying to eat your dead skin. For lunch we went to a small resort which had a shop and bakery, everyone was so excited. We've only been away 2 days haha.
That evening we shared a dorm with the people we had shared a car, that's was pretty cool.
Up in the morning for a bus to Noosa x
