The motorway ripped through the dense green landscape. Generic commerical boards scattered all over on giant lollypop sticks. We were dropped on the road outside chinatown - a pedestrian onyl zone at nighttime. Like packhourses we struggled our way between the narrow stalls before arriving at chinatown inn. We had two seriously actionpacked days in Kuala Lumpur - otherwise known as KL.
We queued or 3 hours for a 20 minutes trip up the Petronas Twin Towers - which was well worth the wiat. The view from the joinging bridge as phenominal. A trip to the butterfly farm was very exciting, they flew so close and we got some great photos. We stopped in at Little India and left rather promtly - a nothingish town which pervy men lning the streeets! We visited the the hardrock cafe for a sneaky beverage and we walked nearly the whole city before deciding China Town was our favourite area - the food, atmosphere and shopping was excellent!
Our final night we booked into a traditional malaysian show for 8.30pm we had the BEST street food yet - down a rat-infested road!! We left full and happy, hankering for a beer. We popped into one bar which turned out to be a little different from our first impression....as we looked around asian girls were dressed up to the nines, flaunting themselves over fat, white, old men!!! Something broke out - a scottish man, who had previously invited us back to his pool (!!!!) had thrown one of the girls to the bar and was screaming and swearing in her face!!!! It was all broken up ....but they werent thrown out, which i think summed up the place. Needless to say we swiftly moved on and nesstled into our traditional show. The danced represented all cultures and groups of people that settled in Malaysia over the years, it was performed so well, we thoroughly enjoyed it.
We both really warmed to KL, tried so many different food - like this one snack that looked like a squidgy meriang, but tasted nothing like - and was stuffed with pork! Ad several other dishes....
- Curry and Potato pasties (which were a good subsitute for hte lack of spring rolls)
- Beef and Black Pepper / Ginger and Spring Onion
- Spicy Won Ton Soup
- Porridge with chicken, for breakfast which was delicious!
- fried wet yellow noodles with beef
We also happend to stumble across a "Jesco" supermarket.... which we spent a good couple of hours in! There were people handing out free samples down virtually every isle! We tried dried fish, 3 in 1 coffee, mini japanses mushrooms and a yoghurt drink! SCORE!
We have made it our mission to try and sample as many local dishes as possible.... not going to lie I think we are doing rather well!!
KL was amost more approchable than BAngkok, with better transport links and less mayhem. Most of the people in KL and Malaysia speak English as well (due to us coming in and taking over those years back!) which makes everything more accessible Generally the people have been absolute jems (excluding the perverts). Most asked us about the Royals when we told them we were from England - whereas the other countries have asked about football teams! One lady asked if I knew Diana - I tried to explain that I didn't personally!
We decided to move north to Penang as we chose not to head into the jungle.... we both fancied a bit more beach, and a few less traumatic bridges for lucy! 5 hour bus in the morning!
