Antigua was exactly what we needed after our 5 days in zephyr lodge. Free breakfast, homecooked meals, no alcohol, early nights and exploring the city. It is a beautiful colonial town and so far our favourite. The Australian girls we have been travelling with for the last few weeks were also staying in the hostel and our friend Tony from Cork. After we checked into the hostel we went straight to the market to grab ingredients for our speciality. You can't go wrong with eggs, frijoles and home made guacamole. We spiced it up with corn on the cob. As we were feeling in need of some culture, we decided we wanted to try Spanish classes. We found the perfect place that we could do two hours as a starter and then if we liked it could do some more when we came back to Antigua before our adventure moved onwards to South America and Colombia. After an early night the next day we trekked to the cross with our Canadian friend to look over the whole city. The view was incredible. We then made our way to our spanish lesson. Our teacher Ricardo was excellent and it was great to use the brain again. The next day we explored the city again and then made our way to Lake Atilian San Pedro. The bus was only suppose to take 2 1/2 hrs but of course guatemalaian time it took 4 hrs. Dani was practically sitting on the bus drivers knee and Sarah was squashed into the back with the a broken window that wouldn't close so was freezing the whole time. We arrived at Hostel Fe and went straight out for food and drinks in Sublime. We took advantage of happy hour(s) and then danced the night away to a local band. San Pedro is over populated with backpackers with dreadlocks and very 'zen'. The next day our heads were very sore but we were not going to let that beat us and hired kayaks to go around the lake. The lake was very choppy so we spent the time trying to beat the waves and not topple over and avoid the speed boats jetting around. We booked the sunrise indian nose trek and since it was a 3.20am start we had an early night and retreated to our hostel at 8pm. Our guide was the cutest man ever and very friendly and even though he had no English and we have no Spanish we managed somehow. It was a steep incline which was pretty tough and takes a while to get into your groove that early but luckily it only took 30 mins. It did gave us serious fear for next week's volcano trek which takes over 4hrs. When we got to the top the guides created a bonfire and we roasted some coffee. The sunrise was incredible and we could see the volcano erupting in the background. We grabbed a shuttle bus back and spent the day hanging out by the lake. We got a surprise when our Canadian friends checked into our hostel room so we went for dinner and did the table quiz in our hostel. Officially the worst quiz ever, it took 3 hours and when we got to the end to do the scoring they realised they had no answers to any of the questions so it just ended and we then danced the night away. We are heading back to Antigua today and welcoming Mr Sheehan to the adventure as he joins us for Guatemala and Colombia.
