THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD FOR REAL
8 hours later and we still wanna get to the Great Ocean Road.... nobody told us the start was so far away from Adelaide! We spend the day driving, passing little places where Mark picks up his free 'driver reviver' coffee, plus a $1 sausage sizzler (butty). Eventually we arrive at the beginning of this famous drive just in time for the sunset, although after a lovely sunny day spent in the car, wouldn't you know it but it has clouded over once we have arrived at the Coast. Still the sight of the sun's rays passing through the clouds and hitting the water at the 12 apostles is pretty wonderful, even if it is not quite the dazzling picture postcard scene we were hoping for as it's freezing here and oh yes we mean 'bloody freezing'! So it's back to the campsite after stopping off for fish and chips, which are pretty good but never quite the same as the ones you have back at home - they taste too healthy for one thing.
The following morning we take in the apostles again (oh and we are refusing to call them the 12 apostles as unfortunately every few years another one falls down into the sea, so they are quite a few short now), hoping to experience the magic. But try as we might it is just too damn cold and cloudy to get the full impact so we give it up as a bad job and carry on down the road. The Coastline is magnificent as we both thought it would be and we pass though small seaside resorts which are still quite charming and not totally 'trendied' as yet. Finally, we stop off at Bells Beach (of Point Break fame) the famous surfing beach where a major surf championships has just been held, you can see why, surf's up dude.
Oh sh*t not a city! The next thing we know Sarah is driving, we are on the motorway, it's rush hour and we are rapidly heading towards Melbourne!!!! It's time to change driver.
