Today we caught the Train on route to Cambodia. The train took about 7 hours to get to the Thai/Cambodian border. This is where it all started lol You have to get a tuk-tuk to the border that bit was easy then he tried to get us to pay this dodgy guy 1000 Bhat for a visa but me and Lee stood our ground and walked away with them shouting at us lol. The land between the borders is no mans land and there are kids begging every where and it's horrible!! We finally got to the border and then the Visa guy tried to charge us more so Lee stood there arguing that it should be $20 dollers like it said on the sign above them. These police are so corrupt here they just pocket the extra money they make. In the end they took the $20 dollers looking rather annoyed. At this point we had met another couple that we stuck with to get a Taxi to Siem Reap. Once our Visas were done we tried to get a Taxi but this guy came and told us we should get on this government bus as it was very dangerous to walk down the road looking for a taxi and that we might get mugged in daylight and that it would take us to a bus station and we could get a taxi there. Little did we know that this guy was actually taking us to his Travel agency and trying to charge us double. He also conned me into to changing my money to Reil cause they didnt have cash points in cambodia (this all turned out to be a load of crap) We finally found a taxi driver to take us so the four of us jumped in. The Taxi ride took about 5 hours the roads are so bad they are just dirt tracks. Its nuts they just drive where they can without going down the ditches in the roads. I was pretty scared to sy the least lol. hen we cam to a point in the road which looked like a small pond our driver decided that he would go straight through it, and then we got stuck. All the locals were laughing at us. Then we decided the two strapping men in the taxi (Gareth and Lee) should get out and try and push the taxi out. When they got out they were up to their thighs in muddy water it was so funny we got some photos of it to so you can all have a little laugh lol. Then after a truck pulled us out we nearly broke down about half hour down the road. At this point i was finding the whole thing really funny. We got to Siem Reap in the end and went for a couple of drinks and some local food as it was explained to us Steak and Fish cheese made by monks, i dont actually know how much truth is in that but everyone else thought it was horrible but i quite liked the funky smelling sauce .
The first day we decided to chil in the day and do the sunset in Angor Wat. It was pretty amazing apart from the fact that there were about 50 million Japanese tourists all trying to take a photo it kind of took the whole magical edge away but it was still stunning.
The second day we went to Ankgor Wat, it was absolutly breath taking, and much bigger than i had expected. We had to climb up these steps that were almost vertical and really narrow and very high up. It was alright getting up there but really scary coming down. Even more so when you have about 10 people coming at you from the bottom lol. The we went by tuk-tuk to Angkor Thom, Bayon, Ta Keo, Ta Prohm and Banteay Kdei. Alot of temples to do in one day. My favourite being BAYON this temple was amazing and classic Khmer art and architecture. The faces were outstanding and each carved identically to the next. My other favourite was Ta Prohm, i think this is where the filmed Tomb raider!! It was stunning the way the trees were so over grown into the temple there was definatly something magical about this place and i loved it.
The third day there we done more temples, there are so many here in Angor Wat to do. On this day we went to Pre Rup , East Mebon, Ta Som, Neak Pean and Preah Khan.We also went o a land mine museum/orphanage. It was really heart breaking to read about the orphans stories and why they are there some of them have missing limbs etc it was really sad. The guys at the museum are doing a great job and are still clearing mines to this day that are still killing and injuring innocent people most of the time it's children that get hurt. That night we decided to go out for a few drinks with Elisia and Gareth. Got friendly with a few of the street kids two little boys that are orphans and live on the street. Poor little guys they were really sweet, until Gareth gave them some money and the little one tried to wake up the big one by putting tissue paper he had lit on fire with a lighter on him, after all that the big one still slept through nearly being burnt to death. Then about a hour later the little one no older than 6 or 7 was playing cards and gambeling the money they gave him. lol They were both really sweet kids i was actually thinkng about brining them home with me. If only it was a bit easier than that my mum would have loved that too :-( That night was cut short after me and lee had 2 buckets of wisky and coke and then played pool and lee showing off tied to break with one hand, slammed the white ball flying off the table and smaked me clean on the head. I cried in shock and lee laughed, only now do i see the funny side of it hehe
