G'day again mates!
We have just arrived back, covered in sand from our 3-day Fraser Island 4x4 jeep adventure and it was amazing, so much fun!! We went with a small company mainly as it was running a deal so saved us a few pennies but it turns out it was a good decision as the trip was awesome and alot of that was down to our guide 'Troy' who basically grew up on Fraser Island.
So quick facts about it, its the largest sand island in the world and because of this its a world heritage site so they are very strict on rules for the island to keep it clean and intact. There are also a large family of wild dingos living on the island and these can be a bit of a problem as you arent able to leave any stuff in tents or any food/things out around camp as they will rip apart tents to hunt for food. We also had to learn how to deal with a dingo as they have killed people before!! The best technique is to clap your hands and let them know your boss...we quickly discovered this is very hard as they creep up on you and its soo scary!! We had to wee in pairs at night for protection from them so me and vicki went off for a wee on night one and were scanning the camp with our torches for dingos. All seemed fine but as we got back to the tent vicki suddenly screamed and the dingo was right behind us...screaming was probably the worst thing we could have done as then the dingo was roudy so we had to dive in the tent and spent the rest of the night on guard in our tents!! =PThere was also some confusion on whether to fight or flee tge dinho which ended in me locking vicki out of the tent briefly hehe
So on to what we got up to...we basically spent 3 days cruising the island visitingakes and viewpoints. we all took turns driving on the beach which was fun as you could go around 50mph and sometimes youd have to wait and time your driving to avoid the tides! we also fid inland driving which was crazy some of the drops and bumps were huge...vicki also had to reverse about 400m on her drive as jeeps were coming up the track, she panicked at first but reversed well :-P
So day one was spent crusing and setting up the tents in camp. We also went to Lake Wabby which is a freshwater lake at tje bottom of a huge sandblow or sand dune, very pretty! we all ran/tumbled down the dune and dived straight intovthe lake which we then realised was absolutley freezing..bit of a shock :-P on pur first evening we were treated to an ausdie steak bbq amazing! its been a while since weve had meat so this was great! the evening ended with us heading to the beach which is right by camp and star gazing and we were moonwalking down the beach tto see the plankton. the evening ended with lots of goon drinking and of course the dingo encounter!
Day 2 and we were all up at 6am with sore heads. first stop were the champagne pools which are basically giant rock pools and the waves crash over you creating bubble baths. we all braved the cold and got in it was again freezing but i think it cured the hangovers :-P next we climbed indian head which gives you a view over fraser island. finally we went to eli creek which is like a natural lazy river that you can float down and then we went to lake alma which is home to turtles, troy fished one out for us to see! tge lakes are all surrounded by tea trees so the water isvinfused with tea tree oil so its basically a free spa you come out feeling refreshed so we took advantage and had a good clean. the sand is used as an exfoliator so much so you can wash ypur hsor and even brush your teeth with it...we passed on the teeth brushing with sand ha! so day 2 ended woth us playing goon drinking games with the canadians and sweedish...lots of fun!!
Pur final day was another 6am start as we had to pack up camp and we headed to lake mackenzie which is tge most well known lake asvits huge!! that pretty much sums up our fraser island adventure it was lots of fun to explore and is one of those places you cant quite believe exists as thete are so many mysteries about it including how a rainforest has grown out of sand :-) anyway we thought itwas time tge dingos had their home back so we headed home to hervey bay. photos will follow soon when we find a pc. apologise for messy spling im on the greyhound bus and its v bumpy!! xxx
