This was our third day in Helsinki. We took the train out to Korkeasaaren, one of the islands nearby, and visited the Helsinki zoo, on yet another nearby island. The zoo has a unique lookout tower, made out of wood.
We also went out to the town of Myyrmaki to see the Myyrmaki Church, designed by architect Juha Leiviska in the 1980s. It was very lovely; built of light red brick, completely white on the inside. Becky, Shandra, and I also hiked up to the Rock Church, just a few blocks from our hotel. We were too late to see inside, but we did hike around it, and are planning on going back tomorrow to see the inside.
Yesterday, we went to Kamppi Station, the Metro and Bus, to buy transportation passes. We then walked down to the docks and ate lunch at an outdoor market. From there, we did a sort of scavenger hunt, finding places and thing, which we had to photograph and/or sketch. The hunt went pretty well until it started raining while we were attempting to search the graveyard for a headstone that Alvar Aalto designed for his brother-in-law. We finished up at the Olympic Stadium, and went back to the hotel to clean up and go out for dinner.
