So much has been happening it"s hard to keep up with it all. It' now day 61 of our incredible trip and we are heading for Florence as I write this.We enjoyed our drive from Assisi ( it was light when we left hooray) to Pompeii past Monte Cassino to the Bay of Naples. Pompeii the ancient city that was covered by lava & ash from the Mt Vesuvius eruption in AD 79, it lay undiscovered for centuries. We met the local guide who was very good and we walked us through the ancient streets viewing remains of what would have been homes, shops ,water fountains, a theatre, baths, sports arena, the pottery, the red light rooms and so much more. So fascinating to be walking on marble floors and cobble stone roads over 2000 years old! So many photos again! As we travelled we watched a DVD The Dark Heart of Italy about the sacking of Monte Cassino monastery during WW2. Interestingly this has been rebuilt and sits proudly on the hill as you pass by. After this incredible stop we drove onto Sorrento up the narrow streets and winding road to the hotel. The backyards were little lemon groves and trellised grape growing areas. The hotel was beautiful and the light fittings and artworks were tastefully all round the foyer. Gold doors of the lifts sparkled too. We quickly dropped our hand luggage and then boarded two mini-buses to drive on the Amalfi coast to Positano yet another wonderful experience. We stopped on the high cliff road to take some photos. I can't get over the amazing places where the buildings jut out from the cliff face. Narrow winding streets, incredible drivers, small cars (fortunately) and lovely shops . A walk on the black sand beach and a hand & toe in the Mediterranean Sea followed by a nice hot chocolate and a wander back to the mini buses via the church and the art and souvenir shop. I was glad the interior lights of the bus were turned off as we descended the coast road - it was better than Luna Park. We got safely back and went to dinner at the Hotel. 4 courses tonight. Lovely vegetables and salad starter, pasta, chicken and chocolate panacotta, all quite delicious. Retiring to bed was wonderful - lots in this day but so enjoyable. Wake -up call 6am ,breakfast 7 to be ready to go on the mini-buses again to the Port of Sorrento to catch launch to go to the Isle of Capri. A bit of a downpour and rough seas put a bit of a doubt about our visit to Capri . We had some good news and were able to leave on the 9 am boat. The crossing was a bit hairy - a little rough you might say which caused some folk a little discomfort. We arrived on the Isle after about 40 minutes and Henrico the guide joined us and directed us to the Funicular ride up to the top where we alighted at the Square and then went on to the Caesar Augustus Gardens. The views from here were the best. The interesting coastline and the winding old road which looked like a snail trail below us.Because of the inclement weather we had to leave Capri on the 11.20 launch. Instead of going to Naples we returned to Sorrento where the mini buses were waiting to take us back to the hotel where we had a toilet stop and then set off for the city of Rome and the Vatican city.
