We have been to the Ends of the Earth - Finisterre! And the legends of yore are true! There are wondrous sights to behold! The grandeur is beyond magnificence! There are sights beyond imagination!
Our journey since Santiago has taken us through a multitude of explosions! Explosions of brilliant colour and sound! Dark blue Atlantic waves smashing against the impreachable remote Galician coast and washing up on isolated white sandy beaches visted only by seagulls.
Atop the cliffs are forests and forests of pine ready to have their pollen teased from the new flowers. It is truly an amazing sight to see a pine tree explode, shaken of it pollen and enveloped in a yellow cloud of fine yellow powder! We have never seen the landscape covered in a fine yellow powder. Nor the distant hills obscured in a fine yellow pollen mist with tree after tree disappear in a pollen explosion!
As we have walked through Galicia we have seen new born lambs staggering on their weak legs with blurry eyes bumping into long stems of grass! So too foals, calves and puppies!
After 35 days of walking, it has been fantastic to experience the changing of the seasons. Winter had its firm grip on the country as we started. But as we moved further and further to the "Ends of the Earth", spring has become more and more pronounced and colourful. Splashes of colour of butterflies, birds and flowers in every corner of this world! And the changes are as ancient as time itself! And we have been fortunate enough to have seen, heard, tasted, heard and smelt the change unfold around us!
The legend Tir-na-long say that even before the tomb of St. James was discovered in the 9th century, pilgrims came to see the sun set in the West. In the enchanted land of eternal youth across the everlasting sea and pay tribute. This morning we went to Cape Finisterre ourselves. Long before the townsfolk had risen, we were paying our own tribute. Tradition says that pilgrims should burn something at the cape as a way of thanks. So the trusty, smelly socks of mine and Ing´s stove fuel were our tribute. With the sun rising, the rain showers falling as they swept out to sea, the waves crashing far below and three rainbows in the sky above us, we felt truly blessed to have witnessed and experienced everything that we have on our journey across Spain to the "Ends of the Earth"!
The are not enough superlatives to describe the beauty of this part of the world. Although it is Spain, it feels entirely like a country all of its own. The people here are Galician first and with wide, broad, happy smiles and warm hearts for pilgrims like us.
We are sad to be leaving this path. Sad to be leaving this fantastic part of the country! But we know that new ones always begin when the last one ends. And so our path continues to pastures and adventures new! Who knows. Maybe our path will bring us back to the "Ends of the Earth" sometime again!
Ever onward, ever upward!
