The highest point of the entire Botswana is only 900m high and it is found at Tsodilo Hills….Botswana is a VERY flat country with a highest point of 900m!
Because of its protruding height….in a very flat country, even 900m is pretty impressive…..it is like a beacon. In eons past, local San and other tribes used this place as a portal to their gods or spirits or ancestors or deities. And recorded their passing in rock paintings and petroglyphs. Even to this day, various groups of every kind still use the hills as a portal to other places and dimensions. But it was also a place to tell stories through the paintings. Believe it or not, there are rock paintings of penguins, whales and seals!
Imagine a giant geographic mountain sized signpost where passing people left messages for those that followed them. If you can do that, then you can imagine this place. As a result, the place is steeped in folklore. And undeniable power.
The most eerie and strange aspect of camping in the very shadow of the Hills was the complete absence of ANY African night sound. Even the insects had buzzed off!Darkness descended with a complete absence of sound, save what we made ourselves.
