So we arrived in Cambodia about 4 days ago...first stop was Siem Reap - which is home to one of the largest and most important set of Temples for Buddhists - Angkor Wat - ruined Royal city...or as some of you might know it the home of Tomb Raider!Well minus the Lara Croft get up (kakhi vest and shorts which I tried to find but to no avail!)we set off exploring the heaps and heaps of temples ...one word WOW - totally out of this world....some gorgeous ruins from Angkor Wat itself which is bloody huge to Bayon (a temple of huge buddha faces) and Ta Phrom which was the location for Tomb Raider - you know the one where she walks through the stone archway which is covered by vines...well its exactly like that...obviously had to get some pictures of that...but the rest of it was just as amazing...nature had totally taken over it and vines and trees can be seen twisting around, under and over the ruins and fallen rocks...great place. Talking of Tomb Raider we were on our way back from the temples one late afternoon when I spotted a lady with long dark plaited hair, baseball cap and sunnies surrounded by a group of children and accompanied by a photographer with a very professional looking camera...Ms Jolie perhaps??? We happened to over hear that she has a place in the Cambodian rainforest and is holding a meeting with the Forestry Commission there over the next few days...??? Anyway, nuff about star spotting...next stop was Phnom Penh...chilled city, full of character...As soon as we arrived we knew it would be fun...the tuk tuk and motorbike drivers literally had to be held back from the passengers departing the coach as they're so eager to get your business that they are shouting, banging the windows and "baggsying" your business even before you know where you are! LOVED IT... Spent the entire time buzzing around the city like locals - on the back of a motorcycle taxi (of course with NO helmets!) ...Both Nate and I loved it...the traffic is crazy - you're supposed to drive on the left but there's an unofficial (official?!) outside lane that's works as a slip road for traffic travelling the opposite direction but haven't quite made it across the 5 or 6 lanes of cars, bikes and endless 4x4's!!! Loads of random people offer their services as motorbike taxi drivers...so its hard to tell who's official or not...if there is such a thing. Also most of them jump at the chance to ferry you around but don't know where the hell they are going!! All good fun - even got so used to it we madee like the locals and carried our shopping in one hand and held of with the other. Even took the motorbike to the Killing Fields (our bums were a little sorry we didn't get a tuk tuk its about 30 mins outside town (slightly longer if your taxi driver has apparently never heard of the place and then spends the entire jounrney quizzing you why you would want to go to such a place??!) It's one of the most somber and sobering experiences I've had...home to hundreds and hundreds of mass graves of Cambodians who were victims of Pol Pots henious regime...they've built a shrine in memory of those that died. Its a sort of remembrance temple and houses over 8000 skulls and bones and clothing of those people who were tortured and murdered on site...so sad. Our trip in Cambodia ended here and we're off to Vietnam next, Japan and then back home in about 3/4 weeks... We just want to say Happy Christmas to everyone and we hope you all have fantastic NEW YEAR... Much love Rubes and Nate xxxxxxxxxx
