A Grand Tour of Greece With a Rubber Rat
Eeeek Eeeek!! Yassas! - Hi everyone...sorry about the gaps in updating, we've been a bit of the beaten track & can't always find internet access, we've bought a new digital camera and will add some pics later. sooooo, where were we..
We left Nafplion & set off on another of our creaky Greek bus adventures, up to Tripoli to connect to Sparti, bit of a hike across town to the 'other' bus station, we were given three entirely contradictory sets of directions, and found it more by luck...
We bought tickets and the guy there said the bus would be an hour and a half...at that very moment the Sparti bus swung into the bus stop, and the very same guy leapt on as the conductor!! (This happens a lot!)
At Sparti bus station we met some Australians heading our way & jumped the bus on to Monemvasia. This was wild..., a mad driver in an ancient coach, anyone seen the Italian Job? this guy was texting with one hand, rolling a fag with the other and spinning the wheel with his elbow 'round hairpin bends with a 500m drop at 50kmph! ..Shortly after leaving, a taxi headed us off and blocked the road, then a big row broke out between the taxi passengers and the bus driver...it seems he left Sparti 5 mins early (which is absolutely unheard of in Greece) ..so these guys jumped a cab (Follow that bus!! - don't know that in Greek!) to head the bus off at the pass.
Of course the mad bus driver was now livid and upped the pace! Good god.. our rudimentary Greek didn't let us enjoy the slanging match which went on for the next ten miles, but we had a fair idea. 30 mins later the guys got off and they all seemed the best of friends again. Other than that our journey through miles of orange groves and winding mountain passes was quite a spectacle. We all arrived in Monemvasia a good five hours ahead of schedule and picked out a nice hotel with cheap off-season rates.
